March 2015

Modern day life is increasingly about how quickly people can travel from point A to point B, with high speed transport infrastructures developing daily. If it’s not about how quickly humans can travel; it’s about how fast information can be fed from one location to another. So it’s not surprising that sometimes there is a need to escape those pressures and do quite the opposite.

Berkeley River Lodge, the newest hotel to join the prestigious SLH portfolio, makes escaping reality possible. This exclusive hotel is perched on the unspoilt Kimberley Coast of Australia, 150kms away from the nearest town and inaccessible by road.

Below, SLH takes a look at some of the distinct locations of its hotels within their portfolio of 520 hotels in 80 countries.

Berkeley River Lodge

Guests arrive at Berkeley River Lodge by seaplane or light aircraft to start their wilderness adventure hundreds of miles from town or road. The property is just a stone’s throw away from some of the most beautiful untouched wilderness on earth – at Berkeley River Lodge guests can’t help but feel the beauty and calm of such an isolated location.

From the 20 private guest villas, perched on the top of a 65 metre high dune, guests are promised stunning views of the Berkeley River and its red gorges. Floor to ceiling windows, open decks and an open air bathtub really allow guests to make the most of this exceptional location as they wind down, away from everyday life pressures.

Pikaia Lodge (Galapagos)

Opening at the end of September this year, Pikiaia Lodge is set on Santa Cruz Island in the centre of the Galapagos Islands, 1000KM east of the Ecuadorian coast. The 31 acre, 14 roomed property is 52 kms from Galapagos Baltra Airport.

Guests will find themselves perched on the top of two extinct volcanoes in the middle of the world’s second largest protected marine reserve. The hotel operates daily land and sea tours on their private yacht, has its own giant tortoise reserve as well as a beautiful pool, a gourmet restaurant and relaxing spa.

Kirawira Camp (Africa)
Located in the Serengeti National Park, 335km from Arusha and 16km from the nearest air strip, Kirawira camp is a truly elegant tented camp set on a hill overlooking the expansive plains of the Tanzanian national park.
Situated in the Western Corridor, this place embodies everything the Serengeti is famous for, with ringside seats for the annual migration of the wildebeest and action-packed safaris to view the ‘big five’, all in luxurious comfort and miles away from the hustle and bustle of city living.

Pangulasian Island Resort (Philippines)

Situated on a private island and in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Pangulasian Island is 25-minutes by boat from El Nido (421 kms from Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport- flights link the two daily). As soon as guests arrive they can enjoy the resorts 750-metre white powder beach overlooking the bay.

The resort offers 42 individual villas all with a private balcony either on the beach, in the forest, 17 metres from the ground, or with a private pool. Enjoy the relaxing atmosphere or take a nature walk, have a go at snorkelling and encounter numerous species of fish and sea life found in this wonderfully protected marine landscape.
