Larsens Camp - Reviews

Mystery Inspector's Reviews

What's this?

23 June 2011

Top 3 reasons to stay at the hotel:

  1. Located in a truly superb location. All tents face the river (sometimes dry) with plenty of wildlife along its banks. Each morning at dawn guests were treated to the sight of a family of elephants drinking and feeding by the river - on the opposite bank!

  2. The entire staff at Larsens was attentive, very efficient, kind and most accommodating. Everyone went out of their way to make us feel welcome.

  3. Samburu has a semi-arid environment with red soil and blue hills making it visually beautiful. Some of the game in the park is not found in other safari parks – Oryx, Gerenuk Antelope, Grevy’s Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe and the Somalian Ostrich.

Overview:

The ‘bush airstrip’ is only a 15 – 20 minute drive to the Camp but during a short game drive en-route to the camp we were introduced to much of the local wildlife.
During our stay we saw all of the ‘lesser known’ varieties of game and also lion and cheetah, other species of antelope including large numbers of the very endearing Dik Dik and numerous species of birdlife. In addition to viewing the crocodiles lazy on the river sandbanks, it was possible to visit another camp and watch half a dozen crocodiles being fed each evening! It was noticeable in Samburu that the wildlife was less apprehensive of the human visitors which allowed closer viewing. Following devastating floods in the area in 2010, Larsens Camp has now been restored to a very high standard. Almost like new. The ‘tents’ are large with new furnishings, a very comfortable bed and a spacious bathroom. Meals are served either on your own veranda, on the wooden deck on the banks of the river or in the main tent. Breakfast and lunch were buffet service, with a large selection of dishes, while dinner was usually from an a la carte menu. The presentation, quality and quantity of all meals was excellent - as good and in some cases better than we have found in many ‘up market’ restaurants. And the service from a guests own personal butler/waiter was first class. To sum up, we would be more than happy to visit Larsens again. Thank you to everyone.

Top 3 reasons to stay at the hotel:

  1. We loved the adventure of flying into the bush in a small plane to land on a small, sandy airstrip.

  2. By the time we arrived in camp we had seen most of the animals we hoped we would see in our 2 day stay – an amazing opportunity for us.

  3. Our “tent” was better than many hotels rooms we have stayed in and dinner by the campfire was as good as many of the restaurants in which we have eaten.

Overview:

Larsens Camp is a luxury tented safari camp. Their main raison d'etre is wild game viewing and this was superb. We had our own private vehicle and guide, Sampson who was very knowledgeable. Henry, Franco and Jeremy were all charming, well trained and friendly. They gave us excellent service. The Manager, Mike Norris introduced himself to us at the beginning and came to talk to us several times during our stay to make sure that everything was satisfactory and that we were enjoying ourselves. He leads a well run team.

Mystery Inspectors explained:

Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) places great emphasis on its inspection process and believes in the importance of using 'real' guests rather than retired hotel inspectors to provide a valuable assessment of the hotel, its facilities and the quality of service provided. Enlisting guests in the quality control programme not only enables SLH's customers to be directly involved in the process but allows the hotels to shape operations based on their guests' opinions and experienced insight. As far as the hotel is concerned, this means that every hotel guest is a potential inspector.
