Mystery Inspector's Reviews

What's this?

30 August 2011

Top 3 reasons to stay at the hotel:

  1. Kasbah Agafay is an authentic riad (or Moroccan palace) located in the countryside about 15 minutes from Marrakesh. All the furnishings look and feel authentic (except for the Nespresso machines in front of each guest’s room). The property consists of about 4 courtyards (I can’t be sure as I was always getting lost wandering the spacious grounds), each with a gently gurgling fountain adorned with flowers. Each courtyard feels like its own private apartment. Sometimes the only sounds you can hear are a gentle breeze, chirping birds and the fountain. The result is that you are utterly relaxed and transported to another world. Marrakesh is an amazing city, but sometimes it’s nice to be able to escape the noise and crowds.

  2. I would gladly stay at any hotel under the management of Aziz and his team, including Fazel and ‘Shimi’ (the playful hotel cat that would escort us back to our chambers every evening). Aziz is among the most attentive, dedicated and sincere managers I have come across during my time as a Mystery Inspector. Aziz and his team made us feel as if we were the most important guests at the Kasbah Agfafay (and I’m sure all the guests feel that way).

  3. Aziz, Fazel and Shimi should count as reasons # 1, 2 and 3; however I think it is also worth mentioning the breakfast. As the service is so attentive and personalized, you can basically take your meals wherever you please: near the pool, in your courtyard, even on the roof overlooking the Atlas Mountains. I still catch myself daydreaming about what it was like to roll out of bed and find an elegantly laid table waiting under the shade of a tree on the Kasbah’s lawn. It was wonderful to be able to catch-up with my family over a 4-course breakfast (delivered to our table, not buffet) while we plan the day.

Overview:

We had a wonderful 2 days at Kasbah Agafay.

It started when we were greeted at the airport by the Kasbah’s driver and whisked to the hotel in an air conditioned SUV (about a 15 minutes drive). Upon arriving through the ‘fortress style’ doors to the riad Aziz greeted us with Moroccan mint tea and gave us a tour of the grounds (including the spa, yoga space and outdoor cooking classroom in the garden). After a quick nap our driver took us into town to meet with our guide for a private tour of Marrakesh’s streets and souks. Aziz arranged all of this for us within moments of asking. Our driver was waiting for us in the square to take us back to the Kasbah when the tour (and our shopping) was finished. Now, we had a chance to cool-off in the pool and enjoy some aperitifs. For dinner, as this was our first time in Morocco, Aziz did away with menus and prepared a special meal for us.

We started our second day with a delightful breakfast, poolside. When we finished, it was time to meet-up with our driver again to visit some Berber villages with another private guide for the day (with all arrangements taken care of by Aziz). For our last night in Marrakesh we decided to try the famous food stalls in the main square. Aziz was happy to oblige, in fact, he drove us to the square himself and gave us his cellphone number so we could call him for a ride home ‘any time’ we wanted.

It was hard to leave the next morning. Of course we were sad to leave Marrakesh and the beautiful grounds of Kasbah Agafay; but most of all we were going to miss the company of Aziz, Fazel and Shimi. They had been so warm and kind to us during our 2 days at the Kasbah it felt like we were saying goodbye to friends.

Mystery Inspectors explained:

Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) places great emphasis on its inspection process and believes in the importance of using 'real' guests rather than retired hotel inspectors to provide a valuable assessment of the hotel, its facilities and the quality of service provided. Enlisting guests in the quality control programme not only enables SLH's customers to be directly involved in the process but allows the hotels to shape operations based on their guests' opinions and experienced insight. As far as the hotel is concerned, this means that every hotel guest is a potential inspector.
