What's this?

Top 3 reasons to stay at the hotel:

  1. This charming boutique style city hotel is very centrally located – right in the heart of the city – yet on a quiet street. Just a few minutes of walking and there’s great shopping, dining and attractions such as The Royal Ontario Museum and the Gardiner Museum.

  2. The rooms are spacious and the windows open to allow in fresh air. Each one has a butler’s pantry where newspapers and light room service meals can be deposited and accessed without you having to open your door.

  3. The bespoke vegetarian friendly room service menu features fresh, organic and locally sourced ingredients. Developed in conjunction with a holistic chef and nutritionist, they are packed with super foods. They are great to give you extra energy to walk about exploring the city.

Overview:

Intimate and charming yet with a grand two storey Courtyard Café on the ground floor, posh tea room and steakhouse, this boutique style hotel combines privacy with luxurious public spaces.

Afternoon tea is a special experience not to be missed. Prime offers tasty Alberta beef, organic lamb and Atlantic lobsters in a comfortably plush, contemporary setting. The spa, on two levels with pleasantly decorated small rooms, offers a variety of excellent treatments under professional hands. Guest rooms are spacious, comfortable and remarkably quiet for a city centre hotel. The hotel staff is unfailingly polite and friendly. Around the corner from the hotel is Toronto’s top shopping street for high fashion. Nearby are the delights of the trendy Yorkville district with shopping, restaurants and popular bars to see and be seen. All the great downtown Toronto attractions, concert halls, opera, theatres and nightclubs are a mere walk or short cab fare away.

Top 3 reasons to stay at the hotel:

  1. Prime Restaurant is cozy, comfortable and has great food. My friend and I love a good steak but usually don’t enjoy a steakhouse because it often appeals mostly to men. Prime steak house is the exception. The room is warm and inviting, the art and décor appealing, and the food excellent. With soft music playing and an unhurried approach, the evening flows smoothly and is relaxing. But be careful because portions are huge, even for a man – so gauge your appetites. A well-marbled, melt-in-your-mouth rib eye was cooked separately for two to perfection (yes, the chef cuts the steak in half first and cooks it to each diner’s preference). Caesar salad was also a generous portion, well seasoned and not too garlicky (served in an elegant long narrow boat dish with sweeping ends.) With an extensive wine list and the highest rating from Wine Spectator, the evening is a celebration of both good food and fine wines. And as you let your food digest, enjoy the ambience and feast your eyes on the art.

  2. Strolling Yorkville and Bloor Street, and taking in numerous nearby attractions. The Windsor Arms Hotel is perfectly situated in downtown Toronto. You’re only a few minutes walk from upscale Yorkville and the Bloor shopping scene, or to the Museum, Bata Shoe Museum, or the University of Toronto’s historical buildings and grounds. The main intersection for the Toronto transit system (called the TTC) is a short walk away, as are a major department store, theatre, and nightlife. We enjoyed a short walk after dinner, and went window shopping the next day after checkout and before lunch. It was fun and made for a very enjoyable activity.

  3. Enjoy the discreet atmosphere and Amanda’s friendly service at Club 22, the bar/lounge. It’s hard to find a cozy nook for an after work/after hours drink in a city that rushes from sunrise to sunset. The small space is well appointed with window tables to watch the world go by – and being on a quiet side street near the main shopping area gives you just enough interest out the windows without being drawn to the outside world. Inside the mood is relaxing and genuine. Marble, dark wood, mirrors, lush curtains, and lots of sparkle from the bar’s back wall of bottles gives the right atmosphere and puts you in the perfect frame of mind. Drinks were deftly mixed.

Overview:

I rarely get to travel with a friend because it’s always so difficult to co-ordinate our schedules and budgets. Because The Windsor Arms is located 15 minutes from my home, I wanted to enjoy their offerings and spend quality time with a close friend. It couldn’t have been more perfect for that. My friend and I planned to do nothing except catch up with each other’s lives and relax.

Our room was ready for us when we checked-in at 1:00 pm (fully expecting to leave our bags with front desk and hit the spa). Instead we had time to unpack, change into our robes and shuffle off to the spa (conveniently located on our floor). After swimming, and being pampered and relaxing, we headed back to our room for a little room service of a cheese plate with fruit. It was delicious! We had fun sitting in our robes for a couple of hours talking and laughing.

We heard a lot about Prime, the Steakhouse at the hotel, and made a reservation for 7:30 that evening. We went for a drink first at Club 22 on the hotel’s main floor, then wandered around admiring all the little rooms and nooks of this historic hotel. It was interesting to look at the photos and reminisce about the many famous guests this hotel has been honoured to host over the years.

The next day we had plenty of time after breakfast to go to the gym, the pool, then pack and checkout before deadline. But first the must-do walk to window-shop and take in the street scene. The weather was perfect for November and gave us the exercise we needed – and worked up our appetites for a leisurely light lunch before heading home. As we left, we remarked that we had done so much in such a short time, and were feeling quite relaxed. And best of all, no planes to catch!

Guests' Comments

There is absolutely nothing that compares to the Windsor Arms. It's a true boutique hotel with an amazing location, service and facilities. The Spa is incredible, the Bar is fun and the new restaurant, steak house, is the best.

The room service food was delicious. The staff - butler, front desk, housekeeping, front door - was gracious and seemed devoted to our comfort. I highly recommend this unique boutique hotel.

Mystery Inspectors explained:

Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) places great emphasis on its inspection process and believes in the importance of using 'real' guests rather than retired hotel inspectors to provide a valuable assessment of the hotel, its facilities and the quality of service provided. Enlisting guests in the quality control programme not only enables SLH's customers to be directly involved in the process but allows the hotels to shape operations based on their guests' opinions and experienced insight. As far as the hotel is concerned, this means that every hotel guest is a potential inspector.
