Things to do
The novelist Ernest Hemingway was a keen deep-sea fisherman and lived for a while on the Florida Keys. You can visit his house, see his desk and stroke the many cats that roam here. Descended from Hemingway’s own feline friend, they all have one extra toe.
Swim with dolphins. Or dive into coral reefs. Charter a deep sea fishing boat. Or play golf on world-class courses. And if you want an easy way to keep fit while you’re here, why not hire bikes? The flat landscape makes them the perfect way to get about.
Florida is home to the Everglades, meandering mangrove swamps, and you can find out about this unique ecosystem at the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Centre. There’s a reef aquarium here too, while Key West Nature Preserve is home to a wide range of local wildlife.
