What's this?

Top 3 reasons to stay at the hotel:

  1. Service  - Highly attentive staff throughout the hotel. The waiting staff in “The View” restaurant were, in particular quite exceptional. Not only were we talked through the cheese board but our waitress knew exactly which farm in the local area the cheese had come from. What’s more, they were excellent!

  2. Atmosphere – The hotel has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, where very smart New Yorkers seemed to feel “at home”. If Ralph Lauren ran a hotel I am sure it would look and feel like this.

  3. Location – The hotel faces beautiful Mirror Lake in upstate New York and is a strolling distance from Lake Placid and its palatial historic homes. Both lakes offer the options of boating activities in Summer and moments away are no fewer than six million acres of parkland, known as the Adirondack nation park – the largest in North America. In all four seasons there is something for everyone.

Overview:

This traditional style hotel offers a comfortable and elegant lodging experience, moments away from New York States most famous lake, Lake Placid. Also home of the 1980 Winter Olympic Games.

It is evident from the outset that this is a family run hotel, where time is taken to treat guests as individuals. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable and keen to assist in making your visit as memorable as possible. Rooms are comfortable with beautiful lake and mountain views. There is a strong emphasis on keeping food local. This reflects well on the quality of food served throughout the hotel.

The hotel is a short stroll around the lake to the village of Lake Placid which has many quaint shops and boutiques. However, a 10 minute car ride away you will find peace and solitude in the Adirondack Region's six-million-acres of wild forests and towering mountains. A nature lovers paradise!

Top 3 reasons to stay at the hotel:

  1. Sitting in the games room after dinner to play checkers and listen to the crackle of the fire. The room is so warm and cozy with great views of the lake, night sky, and the twinkling lights of the cottages across the lake. There are cozy nooks to just sit and read, a card table, plush sofas to watch the fire, or have a specialty coffee and chat with guests. The lighting is great with lots of lamps and a huge chandelier that cast a soft glow on everything. The room sits off of the entrance and reception so it’s quiet yet accessible to the bar, dining room, and main lounge.

  2. Time at the spa for a special service is a real treat. Although I didn’t rate the spa the highest (due to the less than fully attentive and personal service by spa reception), I can honestly say that the time spent there was relaxing and rejuvenating. The place was spotless and had all the right amenities. Because of low season, it was not crowded. The service I had included a waterpak treatment which was out of this world (basically being wrapped in a soft water cover while lying on a mattress that lowers into the water to support your body. Fifteen minutes was all that was needed for a truly relaxing effect. And the shower afterwards with its six spray nozzles to wash off the kelp scrub was exhilarating before the final body lotion was applied. It was actually hard to get out of that great shower to finish my spa treatment!

  3. Walking into the town of Lake Placid and around Mirror Lake. At any time, day or evening, the easy 2 mile walk is delightful. The walkway is flat and well maintained and there are many joggers, dog walkers, and people enjoying the scenery or night sky. On our stay it snowed lightly overnight, so the scene was magical and added to our relaxing stay. Everyone was friendly and all were enthusiastic about being outdoors and taking the walk. With children, it would be special too.

Overview:

My husband and I have been to Lake Placid a couple of times and enjoyed it on both occasions. This was the first time we went during low season and it was a great time to visit. All we wanted was a relaxing time without rush, stress or timetables – and we accomplished that easily! It was easy to find Mirror Lake Inn Resort & Spa and checking in was simple and convenient. Our room was just as we have come to expect from SLH (and with a nice cheese tray from management!), so we could start to relax immediately upon arrival.
It felt as though we were in a large family house with attention when we needed it, but not otherwise. In other words, this hotel makes their guests feel like family. Although there could have been more attention paid to us in some instances, attention was never over the top or phony nor was it ever off-handed.

There were always plenty of home baked cookies at the front desk, coffee and tea all day long, afternoon tea service in the main lounge, and two nice restaurants to choose for dinner. The bistro was relaxing and comfortable and has a nice variety of bistro meals, all very good. Breakfasts were filling, leisurely, and got us off to a great start of day. Dinner in The View was welcoming, comfortable and relaxing. We especially liked that the meal service was prompt so we could have a 3-course meal in less than two hours. More than that we find too long to sit at a table – especially after a day of spa services!

All in all, our stay was a pleasure and very relaxing as we hoped it would be.

Mystery Inspectors explained:

Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) places great emphasis on its inspection process and believes in the importance of using 'real' guests rather than retired hotel inspectors to provide a valuable assessment of the hotel, its facilities and the quality of service provided. Enlisting guests in the quality control programme not only enables SLH's customers to be directly involved in the process but allows the hotels to shape operations based on their guests' opinions and experienced insight. As far as the hotel is concerned, this means that every hotel guest is a potential inspector.
