Mystery Inspector's Reviews

What's this?

29 July 2011

Top 3 reasons to stay at the hotel:

  1. There is probably no better all-purpose location in all of Manhattan. This hotel sits right in the middle of clubland next to the Yacht Club, the Bar Association Club, the Harvard Club and the University Club on 44th Street ,giving you walking access to every major Broadway Theatre and cinema. And, of course, being on 44th Street you are not only near most mid-town offices but also within very quick striking distance to shopping around Central Park and uptown Manhattan as well as Union Square, Greenwich Village, Soho and Tribeca.

  2. The best kept secret (although it is not really a secret for Manhattan local) is the hotel restaurant, Triomphe, that – like many of the restaurants in the neighborhood – serves with a view to your pre- and post-theater needs. The things that separates Triomphe from most theater friendly restaurants is the shockingly gorgeous food – something you might not expect at this little gem of a hotel. The at once effervescent, erudite and mega-efficient Erin told us that the restaurant is a top pick for Manhattanites looking for superior food before and after theater performances and after having enjoyed the amazing short ribs and the equally delicious duck confit we have no reason to doubt the veracity of Erin’s assertions.

  3. Given the small but gorgeous rooms in this hotel, its incredible location near theaters, offices and shopping, and the superior cuisine in the restaurant, it may come as a surprise that this uber-comfortable old-worldly-but-with-all-mod-cons hotel is as reasonably priced as it is. It came as a shock to us, to be honest. This will become our “home in Manhattan” on our next stay.

Top 3 reasons to stay at the hotel:

  1. Location, Location, Location. There are few hotels with as much character so centrally located in Midtown Manhattan. At The Iroquois New York you are just minutes away from classic must-see New York City: Broadway, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, St Patrick's Cathedral, the Museum of Modern Art, Saks Fifth Avenue, Grand Central Station, the Chrysler Building, the New York Public Library and Bryant Park, Macy's and, of course, the Empire State Building. You could spend a week's vacation staying at The Iroquois New York and never wander more than a few blocks from the hotel.

  2. Triomphe Restaurant. The relaxed atmosphere of the bar is a great place to start the evening and unwind with a cocktail after a busy day's shopping or sightseeing. I ordered a Manhattan (what else!) which was expertly mixed. The dining room itself is intimate and romantic with a beautiful ceiling and elegant artwork. Our server was confident and courteous but also had a pleasant sense of humor. The menu is essentially French and uses seasonal ingredients. As it was autumn I chose the butternut squash soup with baked apples and fig syrup for my starter and the pepper crusted venison with brussel sprouts as my main course. Both were delicious. The ingredients were very fresh and prepared to perfection. The food was so good I couldn't resist desert so I indulged myself with the nutella flan. It meant a few extra minutes in The Iroquois' gym the next morning but it was worth it. This is one of the best, if not the best, restaurants I've eaten at in Midtown NYC and the only surprise was that I hadn't eaten there before. I'll certainly be recommending it to friends. The restaurant's name isn't over claiming, the evening was a triumph.

  3. The New York Library and Concierge. Although not necessarily a reason to stay at the hotel in itself, the Library is certainly a good tip for making your stay as enjoyable as possible. Before heading out to explore we grabbed a cup of complimentary coffee and stopped off at the New York Library to plan our day. This is a cozy area near the entrance of the hotel with two computer terminals so you can check your e-mail (if you didn't bring a laptop to use the free in-room wireless Internet) and a printer so you can print out tourist information and maps. The library contains a wide range of New York guide books and is situated right next to the Concierge's desk so we could ask the knowledgeable staff any questions that arose from our research (such as directions) and also to make restaurant or theater bookings.

Overview:

From the moment we stepped out of our yellow cab on to the sidewalk in front of the hotel, The Iroquois New York delivered a quintessentially New York experience. It has a grand stone façade, with flagpoles and an imposing marquee above the entrance. The hotel also has some illustrious neighbors including The New York Yacht Club, the Harvard Club and the Algonquin Hotel adding to the Manhattan buzz.

The hotel lobby has that classic New York vibe, all marble, dark polished wood and brass. In the lobby, as well as the reception desk, there is a separate Concierge desk and the New York Library which provides internet access and a selection of guidebooks. There is also small but well equipped gym on the third floor with bathroom facilities and a sauna to soothe sore muscles after a day spent walking around Midtown seeing the sights. All the staff with whom I had contact, from the porter who greeted me and handled my luggage to the receptionist who checked me out, was courteous and efficient.

The rooms are tastefully decorated in tones of ochre. The bed was very comfortable and featured a plush headboard. The bathrooms are fitted out in a timeless combination of marble, glass and brass. The room provided all the facilities you might expect from a luxury hotel including free wireless internet access, flat panel HDTV, Frette linens and bathrobes, Molton Brown amenities and a complimentary overnight shoeshine. My only concern was that some of the décor, furniture and fittings were showing their age (which is perhaps typical of traditional Manhattan hotels) and that some areas of housekeeping needed closer attention.

The afternoon room service menu was limited but the food tasty and delivered promptly. In the evening the bar has an enjoyable ambiance, good service and making it an ideal place to relax over a drink. Undoubtedly the highlight of our stay was the fabulous meal we had at Triomphe. The dining room is elegant, the service friendly and the food and wine exceptional. Breakfast was also excellent. Like the main dining room Le Petit Triomphe is attractively decorated with modern art and has a welcoming hearth. There is both a buffet and a good à la carte selection on offer. I had the French Toast which was delicious, if not a low calorie option. The unhurried atmosphere means you can linger here over a cup of coffee and the morning newspapers.

One of The Iroquois New York's chief attractions is its proximity to both the Midtown business district and many of the essential New York sights making the hotel ideal for work or a vacation.

Overall we had a very enjoyable stay at The Iroquois New York and I would have no hesitation in recommending the hotel.

Guests' Comments

“Love, love, loved the Iroquois!” One of the best things was the charm and intimate European feel of the hotel ... not one of those huge McHotels where no one knows who you are and lacks any charm or character.

“A Wonderful experience” I have been to many luxury hotels around the world and the Iroquois NY is one of the best! It's very well located between Time square, 5th avenue luxury shops, a few blocks from Rockefeller center and Empire states building.

“Wonderful Staff top quality room” I stayed ONLY one night but my experience was wonderful. Every member of staff was charming and helpful, without exception.

Mystery Inspectors explained:

Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) places great emphasis on its inspection process and believes in the importance of using 'real' guests rather than retired hotel inspectors to provide a valuable assessment of the hotel, its facilities and the quality of service provided. Enlisting guests in the quality control programme not only enables SLH's customers to be directly involved in the process but allows the hotels to shape operations based on their guests' opinions and experienced insight. As far as the hotel is concerned, this means that every hotel guest is a potential inspector.
