Top 3 reasons to stay at the hotel:

The property: The Castle is set in an amazing area, well-treed with lovely views over the forest and the Hudson River. It’s very quiet and beautiful to look at. The castle towers and walls are interesting to explore… we walked around much of the perimeter and it was very peaceful and enjoyable. Unfortunately, no one told us there was a marked walking trail as that would have been great to get exercise after our long car ride. There’s a huge chess set (see photo on their website) which is fun to look at and play if you’re so inclined. And there are various little nocks and areas to sit quietly and enjoy the view and sounds of nature.
-
Equus Restaurant: This restaurant is well worth the money whether for dinner or lunch. In fact, breakfast is very tasty with plenty of quality food (try the “Corn Beef Hash”). A must try is the “Panzanella Salad” served on their lunch menu. It’s out of this world delicious! I took a photo to try to replicate it at home. What was nice at lunch was that I wanted a small salad and a light pasta main, which they accommodated by making me a small size salad, followed by the pasta. The menu (and strangely the prices) for lunch are pretty much the same as that for dinner, but lunch is served in the sunroom off the main dining room so is a very pleasant experience. And best of all, this establishment doesn’t turn its music volume up, so guests are able to talk quietly over a nice meal.

Tarrytown: Although the reception staff we asked didn’t seem to think there was anything of significance in Tarrytown, I’ve since learned there’s some great upscale shopping (Neiman-Marcus, Tiffany’s, and more). Also stated is that the town has some interesting antique shops, etc. We were indeed disappointed that we hadn’t taken the time to explore the town a bit before leaving.
Overview:
Castle on the Hudson is in an interesting area of New York on Long Island.
Because of its location, it’s within easy reach to New Haven and other great seaside towns. The castle theme and property are unusual and, therefore, interesting. The property is large and well laid out. Some of its rooms are located in the original castle building but many are in an added wing which doesn’t at all look like the castle (it’s a stucco/siding style reminiscent of Tudor style) but the halls and public spaces inside are very nicely decorated. A few of the suites in the old wing overlook the Hudson River. Our room had 3 very large windows that opened up wide plus an alcove with a bay window – so lots of light – and it overlooked the forest and a bit of the property. It was always quiet, calm and refreshing when in our room. We missed that the pool wasn’t yet open because photos on their website look like this would be a pleasant place to spend your time.

It’s a Castle! A new one, (19th century) with all of the modern conveniences with great service. This romantic getaway is a treasure that should not be missed.
-
It’s on the Hudson River! With great views of the river, the authentic, (though late 19th century) stone castle is complete with tennis court and pool. It is a one-of-a-kind for a discriminating traveler.

The Castle on the Hudson has an outstanding restaurant! The food and wine are exquisite. Both the dark wood paneled dining room and the airy breakfast room serve memorable meals. This is a fine dining experience with breathtaking views.
Overview:
The Castle on the Hudson truly looked like a castle, built of large stones with a large tower. The 'new' addition fits in perfectly with the older building. The chef was excellent and provided us with probably the best meal we have ever had! This alone is reason enough to go to The Castle on the Hudson. The grounds were very well maintained. Not only were the plants in good condition but there were outdoor activities for guests with a bocce court and large chess set. A truly memorable experience.
