Things to do
This island is home to more than just the Tasmanian devil. Visit the People’s Park in Strahan and you might spot platypus. Look out for wallabies as you explore the ancient rainforest and rocky land around Cradle Mountain.
FOOD & DRINK
Tasmania’s celebrated chefs have heaps of locally grown ingredients to draw on, from fresh truffles to aromatic leatherwood honey. If you’re on one of the island’s white-sand beaches, expect to dine on fresh seafood.
And, along with Tasmanian wine, you can enjoy award-winning cheeses.
Port Arthur Historic Site is top of most visitors’ lists. Here you can learn about the convict life on the island, step inside restored period buildings and visit the haunting Old Asylum and Model Prison. For a unique and evocative view of the area, visit at night and take part in one of the lantern-lit ghost tours.
