Top 3 reasons to stay at the hotel:

  1. To stay at Grasmere Lodge and experience a high country station is like nothing else you will have done. Situated in Arthur’s Pass in the midst of hills and rivers and little else gives the visitor a wonderful feeling of peace and tranquility away from the busy world. The original buildings scattered around the property are now used for such things as stables, a clothing shop and a gym and give an inkling of what life was like here many decades ago. They complement the newer accommodation building and chalet suites and the original, extended homestead where pre-dinner drinks and dinner are taken. Bedrooms offer fantastic views across the lake, hills and valleys and provide for your every comfort including possibly the most comfortable bed you will ever sleep in, sheepskin rugs by the bedside and a decanter of port.

  2. Grasmere Lodge has the knack of making you feel as if you are staying on your own country estate rather than being a guest in a hotel. Its isolation means there is a small group of dedicated and friendly staff who do everything. You very soon know them all and they all very soon make you feel completely at home and relaxed and part of the family. You are welcomed and treated throughout as ‘old friends’. Tom and Jo ensure you get the opportunity to spend your time at Grasmere as you wish and are always there to assist whether you want to be active or to sit with a book and a glass of wine in front of one of their lovely log-fires. The service is wonderful but unobtrusive, nothing is too much trouble and you can’t help wondering if they ever sleep!

  3. Grasmere Lodge provides the opportunity for a very wide range of activities which vary according to the season. If you want to do it, they will arrange it for you whether it be mountain climbing, trout fishing, riding, kayaking, helicopter scenic flights, swimming in the heated outdoor pool, tennis, croquet, spa treatments - the list goes on. Irrespective of how you have chosen to spend your day, it will end in the most delightful way with everyone gathered in the old homestead for pre-dinner drinks and the most wonderful canapés followed by chef’s excellent table d’hote dinner. You may choose to share your meal with other guests at a large table, dine at a table for two or be fortunate enough to experience private dining in the candlelit library in front of a log-fire – a perfect and very special end to your day.

Overview:

The standard of accommodation is excellent.
The bedrooms are large with exceptionally comfortable beds, a lovely bathroom with underfloor heating and a spa bath and very discreet housekeeping. Turndown service is carried out while you are at dinner so that you return to a cosy room ready for you to clamber into bed. There is a complimentary mini bar in the room which includes wine, soft drinks, snacks and a decanter of port as well as a selection of lovely teas and coffee.

Grasmere really is somewhere to relax in splendid comfort in the knowledge that you are being expertly cared for with no pressure at all.

Mystery Inspectors explained:

Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) places great emphasis on its inspection process and believes in the importance of using 'real' guests rather than retired hotel inspectors to provide a valuable assessment of the hotel, its facilities and the quality of service provided. Enlisting guests in the quality control programme not only enables SLH's customers to be directly involved in the process but allows the hotels to shape operations based on their guests' opinions and experienced insight. As far as the hotel is concerned, this means that every hotel guest is a potential inspector.
