NATURE
Set off on foot and explore a landscape of drowned river valleys, rocky headlands and deserted sandy beaches. Stroll along peaceful forest tracks to spot native birds and wildlife. Take a boat tour to watch dolphins and orca whales, or keep an eye on the coast to see fur seals.
DAY TRIPS
Take a boat trip to the traditional fishing port of Picton, and relax on the pretty seafront. Picton is also the starting point for the Queen Charlotte Track – a stunning 70-kilometre route passing by waterfalls, historic sites and secluded bays.
WATER
The sheltered coves and dramatic, rocky coastline surrounding Queen Charlotte Sound is made to be explored by water. Hire a kayak, or a boat for a private sailing tour. The region is also popular for scuba diving – dive to the wreck of a huge Soviet cruise ship that has become a reef, teeming with marine life.
The region is famous for its fish. Visit a salmon or cod farm or take a chartered trip to catch your own.
