Top 3 reasons to stay at the hotel:

  1. Wonderful people - from the personal greeting on arrival to the gardeners working on the gorgeous grounds - everyone seems to care! The management also checked we were ok during our stay and everyone stopped to greet you and make sure you were enjoying yourselves. Particularly pleasant personnel at the beach bar where we had lunch twice.

  2. The little touches - A great fruit basket greeted us on arrival to our ocean view suite which had a great long porch. Small sherbets were offered on the terraces and beaches every morning and all water sports such as windsurfing, motorboat rides, waterskiing were offered complimentary either from the beach or at the sister hotel Coral Reef. Books were available in the rooms which was a nice touch as TV’s are only put in your room on demand. (There was a TV room in the main building.)

  3. Food and atmosphere. We tried the room service on our first night when we were too tired to dine out. Food was excellent and service was great. The barbeque night was wonderful. Fresh outdoor grilling with chicken, ribs, steak to order, and at least four kinds of fish including the Bajan specialities of flying fish and red snapper. Also some cooked to order ahi tuna!

Overview:

One of our absolute favorite SLH experiences.

Beautiful facility, wonderful people, great food and drink. Rooms with terraces or porches, great pool and beach encircled by lush and well cared for grounds. All staff were excellent and extremely caring. We stayed a few nights in the sister hotel Coral Reef Club and we can certainly recommend doing a few nights in each of the hotels. Both equally wonderful with many returning guests.

Top 3 reasons to stay at the hotel:

  1. The location on the west coast of beautiful, sunny Barbados is perfect for a relaxing holiday. You wake up with the crashing of the sea to enjoy the hot white sands, snorkel the coral reefs or just hang at the pool. Bananaquits, grackles and Barbados bullfinches greet you at every turn in the tropical gardens that grace the property. It’s a tranquil Caribbean setting that’s tailor made for those that need to escape from winter or big cities.

  2. At night the place turns romantic with flaming torches that light up the beach pathways and dining area. Stay up to enjoy the live music and dancing under the stars.

  3. The new spa offers excellent services – though to really enjoy the ambiance make sure to book one that takes place in one of the individual treatment rooms with their private gardens.

Overview:

In classic Caribbean style, this understated resort is largely open air to allow the sea breezes to blow their cooling air through the rooms. Guest rooms are designed with lots of fretwork, shutters and wooden banisters to complete the laid back ambiance. There are quiet well working air conditioners in the bedrooms but I suggest leaving the patio doors and windows open to enjoy the birds and sounds of the ever present crashing of the ocean. Acres of mature tropical gardens surround the resort and cocoon it from the bustle of island activity. When you tire of hanging at the pool, swimming the ocean, enjoying spa treatments and tennis games you can go off property for a game of golf, island tour or to visit some of the Barbados attractions. Be sure to tour St. Nicholas Abbey, a 350 year old sugar plantation with a working distillery which makes top notch rum in such limited quantity (only 4,000 bottles a year) that it’s mostly sold on property. Their historic 20 minute film of Barbados life in 1935 is a must see. If you purchase their 10 year old rum you can have your name engraved on the attractive etched bottle. Hunte’s Gardens is another unique Barbados experience I highly recommend.

Mystery Inspectors explained:

Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) places great emphasis on its inspection process and believes in the importance of using 'real' guests rather than retired hotel inspectors to provide a valuable assessment of the hotel, its facilities and the quality of service provided. Enlisting guests in the quality control programme not only enables SLH's customers to be directly involved in the process but allows the hotels to shape operations based on their guests' opinions and experienced insight. As far as the hotel is concerned, this means that every hotel guest is a potential inspector.
