Brandenburger Hof opened just after the Wall came down twenty two years ago, and it truly represents the “new” Berlin.
The service provided by the staff is exemplary, with a blend of friendliness and professionalism that demonstrates the cutting edge of the hospitality business. The toiletries are top class and public access to the internet (there still are some of us who do not carry a laptop or use an ipad!) is properly provided in a sensible location rather than stuck in a broom cupboard.
The rooms are modern, but within a classic Berlin residence shell, and the inevitable Berlin courtyard has been used to stunning effect by the architect to create public areas that are seldom experienced in city centre hotels. There is space to drink, dine or just engage in conversation in a conservatory that is so light and airy that it is hard to believe that one is actually indoors and protected from the elements.
The cuisine is outstanding, with the Michelin starred restaurant offering a culinary experience not often found. The less formal eating opportunities match the flexibility of the way in which the hotel uses its facilities and space.
The location of the hotel is excellent – in the heart of old West Berlin. If you want to experience the renaissance of the east of the city, it is only a 10 minute cab ride away, but it doesn’t matter once you are inside this property which bit of the city you are in because this is one of the best of this type of city hotel – and one that is very difficult to leave.
