Introducing Thessaloniki

With its blend of chic boutiques and rich cultural heritage, Thessaloniki begs to be explored. Step out from your luxury hotel and back in time as you wander through ancient ruins. Gaze at legendary Mount Olympus from the top of the Ottoman White Tower. Then come right back up to date as you window shop, people watch and relax in a waterfront restaurant.

Things to do

HISTORY
Thessaloniki’s most recognised landmark is the White Tower, but there are hints at the city’s colourful past on every corner. Visit the evocative Church of Agios Dimitrios – an underground crypt on an ancient Roman bath site. Walk amongst the ruins of the 4th-century Palace of Galerius. On a warm day visit the Kastra, or castle – a neighbourhood speckled with Byzantine churches, where you can peer over the old city walls.

FOOD & DRINK
There are excellent tavernas dotted around Thessaloniki’s main sites, with tables that spill onto the pavements for al-fresco dinners on warm evenings. If you’re looking for fine dining, book one of the exclusive restaurants overlooking the marina. Dip into traditional flavours at the Modiano Market where you’ll find piles of fresh, salty feta cheese.

SHOPPING
Thessaloniki offers a fascinating mix of the old and new. Luxury boutiques line Tsimiski Street, where you’ll find collections by national designers. Or, pay homage to the city’s historical edge with a keepsake crafted in Byzantine style.
