Things to do
HISTORY
County Limerick is dotted with historical sites and monuments. You can easily while away several hours in St. John’s Castle – an imposing fortress that’s been part of the city since around 1200. Inside you’ll find displays of weaponry, Viking excavations and plenty of exhibits to keep children entertained. Stop by Limerick City Museum and marvel at artefacts from the Stone Age, as well as local lace.
ART
Wander through the city’s Georgian streets and you’ll eventually reach Limerick City Gallery of Art. It houses works dating back over 300 years, including pieces by Sean Keating and Jack B. Yeats. Or, if contemporary art is more your scene, visit the city for Eva International.
SPORTS
To sample Ireland’s horseracing heritage, pencil in a trip to Limerick Racecourse. You’ll have the chance to watch both flat and national hunt races with a glass of champagne in hand, and evening meets often feature live music events.
