Environmentally friendly hotels have sprung up across the world in recent years, catering to eco-conscious tourists looking for greener getaways.
But experts say that for hotels today to truly qualify as green, they need to move beyond the usual environmental acts -- like installing energy-saving lights or asking visitors to reuse their towels -- and show a deep commitment to environmental sustainability.
Overlooking Lake Garda in northern Italy, the sleekly minimal Lefay Resort is designed to combine luxurious hospitality with environmental responsibility.
Located some 80 kilometers from the historic city of Verona, Lefay is designed to blend in with the landscape and uses state-of-the-art technology to save energy.
Its green features include: A biomass station, trigeneration of electricity, which can provide electricity, hot water and air conditioning from a single system, as well as microturbines, photovoltaic panels and software for managing energy saving and maximum water recovery.
