Things to do
Taranto was once Taras, an important city founded thousands of years ago as the Greeks set down roots in Italy, before becoming the Roman town of Tarentum. The wonderful National Archaeological Museum houses many treasures and relics from this lost era, including terracotta figures, ornate jewellery and delicate glassware from the 1st century BC.
Taranto is in Puglia, known as the breadbasket of Italy, with a sun soaked local cuisine of pasta, abundant fruit and vegetables and fine wines and olive oil. Dine on regional specialities such as handmade orecchiette pasta with rich tomatoes and sweet peppers. Seek out a coastal restaurant to sample fresh fish and shellfish. Or pack a picnic of light, airy breads, local sheep cheese and succulent olives and head to the beach.
Your luxury hotel in Taranto makes the perfect base for exploring more of Puglia. You could visit the magnificent Castel del Monte, a medieval fortress with an ambitious octagonal design that continues to puzzle historians. Or you could spend the day at one of the region’s many idyllic sandy beaches, including nearby San Caterina di Nardo.
