Things to do

FAMILY ACTIVITIES
Liseberg Amusement Park promises big thrills for little ones – and grown-ups too. Sky-skimming rollercoasters get hearts racing, while retro carousels, teacup rides and playgrounds provide fun at ground level. Gothenburg’s Universeum is another family favourite. Travel through a rainforest or get into inventor-mode. See into deep space or the deep seas. With sharks and clownfish in the aquarium and jungle full of sloths and rainbow butterflies, it brings a touch of the tropics to a city break.

CULTURE
Gothenburg is a magnet for museum admirers. But where the museums are situated is just as entrancing as what’s inside them. Free-to-access Mölndal City Museum was once a sock factory, while arty Röda Sten has made its home in a former boiler house. To voyage into Gothenburg’s maritime heritage, make for Maritiman. You can walk gangways and climb ladders on this floating fleet museum.

FOOD
Culinary connoisseurs will relish Gothenburg. Its food scene is blossoming, with Michelin-starred fine dining sharing the city with trendy street food spots. Look out for corner korvkiosks that will keep you going with the Swedish take on hotdogs, served here with mashed potato. If you can’t decide what to eat, try one of Gothenburg’s food halls and markets. 19th-century Stora Saluhallen is the biggest, with enough stalls to tempt every palate.

Top Tip from SLH

On a gourmet break? Practice what you preach and go to the Feskekörka, the ‘Fish Church’. As well as seeing briny stalls brimming with lobsters and crayfish, it’s ideal for a takeaway seafood lunch.
