Top 3 reasons to stay at the hotel:

  1. Location—the perfect resort but within a city.

  2. Lovely setting on Lake Lugano with both pool and lakeside facilities.

  3. Excellent food, drink, and service especially on the terraces of the dining room.

Overview:

A favorite of both of ours (and this was our third visit) in approximately 5 years.

This is one of the larger hotels we visited and thus had more services than some of the others. It is a lovely property right across from the lake with gorgeous views from the balconied rooms. Yet it is easy to walk or bus to center of town. There is an old chapel on the grounds (usually locked) and a funicular up the mountain right behind (great lake and mountain views from top).

For anyone fond of the Swiss-Italian lakes this is the perfect place to come. It is accessible by train from either Milan or the Swiss cities.

As New Yorkers, we do enjoy having the choices of a midsize city (restaurants, shops, entertainment) very close by – so this is the perfect destination. I know we will return here again.

Top 3 reasons to stay at the hotel:

  1. Special festivities planned for Swiss National Day (1st August). Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola au Lac has the best location in Lugano! The evening starts with a complimentary aperitif on the terrace, followed by a special dinner menu overlooking the grounds as evening approaches. Once darkness has settled in it is time to walk over to the private Lido and grab another complimentary glass of bubbly and a lounge chair to watch the fireworks. This must be the best way to enjoy the fireworks in Lugano.

  2. Ability to rent a private sauna for 2 hours at no additional cost giving you and yours exclusive access to sauna, 2 steam baths 3 showers, plunge pool spread across 2 rooms. A great way to relax after Swiss National Day festivities. Pray for a rainy day so you can enjoy it without feeling guilty about missing the beautiful views outside.

  3. The gardens provide a true oasis of relaxation from the crowds in Lugano. After a day of shopping and sightseeing it’s great to be able to cross through the gates of Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola au Lac and step into their beautiful gardens, change into your bathing suit, grab a book from the library and a reclining chair and enjoy the sunny afternoon. A cold beer delivered from the bar makes everything even better.

We enjoyed everything about this hotel. The rooms are fully renovated with a wonderful view of the lake. There is a tennis court and nice indoor pool and under ground parking. The staff is just great, friendly and ready to help to whatever you request.
