The Goring London - Reviews

Mystery Inspector's Reviews

What's this?

29 November 2011

Top 3 reasons to stay at the hotel:

  1. Located just steps from Buckingham Palace (and Victoria Station) The Goring is within easy reach of many of London’s attractions including Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, Harrods and the boutique shops around Sloane Square to name but a few.

  2. This is a quintessential English hotel.  The 5 Star Goring was built and has been owned by the same English family for over a century.  Over the past decade it has been refurbished to the highest international standards with every modern amenity the visitor could require.

  3. Offering fine dining with impeccable service, The Goring serves traditional British cuisine specially sourced for freshness and quality.  Apart from the main meals of the day served in the elegant Dining Room, The Goring is well worth a visit just for its renowned Traditional Afternoon Tea served on The Terrace, overlooking the garden or in the Lounge. Your choice from a wide selection of teas including their own Afternoon Tea blend and then from a three-tiered silver stand laden with sandwiches, homemade scones and a selection of pastries.  The hotel has deservedly been awarded the British Tea Guild Council Award of Excellence for 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Overview:

A very warm welcome awaited us on arrival.

No problem parking – we stopped outside the main entrance and were immediately greeted with, “Are you staying with us Sir?”  Affirmative -  “I’ll take the car and look after your cases and my colleague will take you to reception.”  Like all the staff, in all departments, nothing was too much trouble.  Everyone was courteous, friendly and efficient.  The registration card was already completed with the relevant information copied from the SLH Club.

After a ‘snack lunch’ in the lounge we were shown to our bedroom.  (As an SLH Club member we were given an upgrade but I am certain the standard of our bedroom would be indicative of all rooms in the hotel.)  Over the past few years all the bedrooms have been upgraded with every modern convenience the guest could want or need.  A very comfortable bed with luxurious linen and a choice of pillows.  Very fast WiFi (if you must!) and a very comprehensive menu of available TV stations and films on demand.  It’s all there and the en-suite bathroom is of an equally high standard – up-to-date but still reflecting the heritage of the hotel along with the comfort and feel of a country house.

Even if you are not staying at The Goring, a visit to the bar in the evening followed by dinner in the restaurant is an experience not to be missed.  The bar is the place to see and be seen.  Full of Edwardian ambiance but with a wine list that would make any connoisseur envious and a list of fine spirits to match.  The waiting staff is attentive but certainly not overbearing and provide guests with the most appetizing Hors d'oeuvre tasted for some time.  I could have stayed all evening, why leave the comfortable and attractive bar?  But then dinner calls.  The Dining Room is renowned not only for its Fine Dining and British cuisine but also for the sumptuous interior designed by David Linley with its Swarowski chandeliers.  A very special place for that special occasion – or just simply for a good meal.

If you are visiting London and looking for a hotel that is welcoming with a comfortable homely feel and excellent service, look no further.

The Goring has such a wonderful sense of place to go with the perfect service and lovely food. Somehow it manages to be warm and impeccable at the same time. Your staff is top-notch; truly best of the best. That is all to your credit.

My family and I had the most fabulous time from the second we approached the door of the Goring Hotel to the moment we reluctantly left it. The memory of our stay will remain with us for many years to come, they certainly will with me.

Every member of staff we encountered from the receptionist, who gave us a tour of the hotel, to the charming doorman, made us feel welcome with their professional approach which gave my family that most comfortable feeling.

When I visited the Goring, and realized I had found my new London home. I plan on darkening your doorway for many years to come!

We hugely enjoyed staying with you at the weekend. The atmosphere at the hotel created by your friendly, professional and dedicated staff was superb. You made our weekend, and we will return.

The hotel, the accommodations, the food are great, but what really makes the Goring Hotel a special place is the staff. The combination of professionalism and personal friendliness can’t be beat.

Mystery Inspectors explained:

Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) places great emphasis on its inspection process and believes in the importance of using 'real' guests rather than retired hotel inspectors to provide a valuable assessment of the hotel, its facilities and the quality of service provided. Enlisting guests in the quality control programme not only enables SLH's customers to be directly involved in the process but allows the hotels to shape operations based on their guests' opinions and experienced insight. As far as the hotel is concerned, this means that every hotel guest is a potential inspector.
