Just a short trip from Colombo, Wadduwa couldn’t feel further away. This is a perfect escape from the city, where a leisurely pace of life meets blissful scenery. As you relax on the beach, keep an eye on the coconut groves that fringe the sand – you might spot elephants. Cool off with a swim in the Indian Ocean. Or journey down the coast to explore the local temples. Then return to your boutique hotel for a laid-back dinner gazing out to sea.

A tropical garden haven, just along the shore from Sri Lanka’s buzzing capital.

Things to do

Wadduwa’s long, sun-drenched beach beckons you to take it easy. From the shade of the palms to the clear water that breaks on the shore, it’s the perfect spot for relaxation. Wander among colourful fishing boats pulled up on the sand. Or sip a refreshing cocktail in a quiet beach bar, as the sun sinks below the horizon.

From a quick dip to a day’s excursion – the Indian Ocean is yours to explore. Arrange a private boat to take you down the shore. Windsurf on the gentle tropical breeze. Or break the surface with a snorkel and enter a world teeming with life.

Take the coastal train to nearby Kalutara for a taste of something different. Once a centre for the spice trade, this seaside resort still resonates with history. An impressive bridge spans the mouth of the Kalu Ganga River, connecting the western and southern borders. And the local shrine Kalutara Vihara is believed to be the only hollow Stupa in the world, and contains over 70 Buddhist murals.

Revitalise with a freshly picked King Coconut. Used in Ayurveda medicine, this native fruit is believed to have healing properties.
