Art Deco Hotel Montana is an iconic hotel in one of Switzerland’s most interesting cities for tourism. I have been living in Switzerland for over six years and I keep returning to Lucerne for its beautiful scenery, cultural sites and great Indian food. I have been all over the country and I can attest that one of the most breathtaking views I have ever experienced in Switzerland was atop Mount Pilatus on a clear summer day (the cable car is 15 minutes from the hotel). For cultural sites you have the architecturally renowned Culture and Convention Center, the covered Chapel Bridge and my personal favorite: the Lion Monument, which Mark Twain described as “the saddest and most moving piece of rock in the world.” As for the last point, I have been told that Lucerne is popular with Indians as the beautiful scenery resembles Kashmir and famous Bollywood film sets. Fortunately for us expats who have grown weary of fondue, restaurateurs have catered to the growing demand for delicious Indian food!

Art Deco Hotel Montana has a winning combination of having one of the best locations in Lucerne (perched atop a hill that overlooks the city, yet conveniently accessed thanks to a private funicular), offering 5 star service, a gourmet restaurant and spacious, stylish rooms. There is a reason Art Deco Hotel Montana is listed as the #1 hotel in Lucerne in trip advisor.

I realize that I just made my task harder by listing 4 reasons under #2, but there is an ‘intangible’ quality worth mentioning. Art Deco Hotel Montana is infused with an energy or liveliness that is found wanting in some luxury hotels. I believe this is due to the hotel’s close association to jazz (memorabilia can be found throughout the property) and the art deco design aesthetics. This dynamic quality is materialized in the enthusiasm that the entire hotel staff displays on a daily basis, the inventive cuisine at Scala restaurant and the energetic crowd that can be found around the piano most nights at Louis Bar.
Aperçu :
My wife and I spotted Art Deco Hotel Montana as soon as we crossed the Reuss River, perched on a hill above the city of Lucerne with its MONTANA sign contrasted against the green hills.
We were pleasantly surprised when during check in the receptionist escorted us to several rooms before inviting us to select the one we preferred (we settled on a spacious corner room flooded with natural light and enjoying expansive views of the lake). After carrying out a thorough inspection of the room (without finding a single flaw) we quickly got dressed to do some ‘air boarding’ (a niche winter sport akin to sledding) at the nearby Mount Pilatus. If you’re not into air boarding Mount Pilatus offers a range of activities for all seasons. When our bodies had had enough my wife retreated to the Day Spa for a relaxing message while I enjoyed watching TV on the Bang & Olufsen. As is our usual tradition, I took my book and headed to Louis Bar to enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail and some jazz while my wife finished getting ready for the evening. Our dinner at Scala was an experience that my wife and I are still talking about. It started when we entered the striking dining room with its expansive windows overlooking the lake and city of Lucerne, ceiling-high palm trees and original furnishings. It was also a nice touch that we were greeted by name by the maître d’ and our servers. I can only describe the service throughout our meal as warm and sincere. You could tell that the restaurant staff has a lot of enthusiasm for their profession and they want all of their guests to have a wonderful evening. The food did not disappoint either (I wish I include pictures in my review as words fail me to describe my steak and dessert). On our way back to the room we passed Louis Bar that was just getting started with another night of live jazz. It was tempting to drop-in for a nightcap, but we had an early morning of skiing planned the next day. The next morning we filled-up on a delicious and plentiful breakfast buffet including Bircher muesli, freshly baked breads and an assortment of Swiss meats and cheeses. While the luggage porter loaded our bags and gear into the car we consulted with the concierge for advice on where to find the best snow and weather conditions. Instead of just pointing us in the direction of the most popular (and potentially crowded) ski resort, the concierge took the time to consult weather forecasts and call several nearby resorts to check conditions, crowds and train schedules. Thanks to his attention to detail we had a perfect day of skiing.

The blend of old and new, as epitomized by our fantastic, newly refurbished room. This theme was indeed repeated throughout the hotel with the art deco environment being matched by a modern approach and feel, relaxed and informal though entirely correct behaviour from the staff, and a generally exciting atmosphere where things were happening.
-
The restaurant experience was reason enough. The evening was made by a combination of excellent menu, superbly competent staff, the classic art deco decor and an eager buzz.

This was excellent value for money! Both the room and the dining experience represented a fair balance between price and quality – expensive, yes, but we felt that we had had good value in line with similar properties – and indeed even better value than most.
Aperçu :
This hotel offered and delivered a classic large traditional hotel experience, modernized with technical innovation and informality of behaviour, that was most appealing.
This property appeared to have got a very well balanced clientele – in terms of age, style, nationality – it is without doubt a credit to SLH, and obviously has a very successful business model.
Would we return? – yes – with alacrity, and with some friends!
