Landmarks

  • Cabo da Roca

Cabo da Roca, the most westerly point in Europe, rising to a height of 144m/472ft above the Atlantic (a visitor's certificate is offered). The headland, known to the Romans as Promontorium Magnum, is a granite outlier of the Serra de Sintra. The view from the lighthouse is not to be missed.

  • Palace of the Condes de Castro Guimaraes

The Palace of the Condes de Castro Guimaraes houses a small museum containing family portraits and other paintings, as well as furniture, china, silver and gold objects and local prehistoric finds.

  • St George's Castle Description

The Castelo de Sao Jorge stands above the center of Lisbon to the east and is clearly visible from a long way off. The origins of this former fortress date back to an Iron Age settlement on this site, which was occupied by the Romans in about 205 B.C. The 110m/361ft high hill on which the castle stands also constitutes the central starting point of Lisbon's development.

  • Hieronymite Convent - UNESCO World Heritage

In the suburb of Belém, parallel to the bank of the Tagus and measuring almost 300m/985ft, stands one of Portugal's most famous buildings, the former Hieronymite Convent. The convent complex originally stood on the water's edge. However, a gradual and natural shift of the river combined with the building of the harbor basin have meant that its once important proximity to the Tagus can now only be imagined. The Praça do Império, laid out as a park, the wide Avenida da India, the suburban railroad to Cascais as well as some harbor basins and the Padrao dos Descobrimentos now lie between the convent and the Tagus.

  • Pena Palace

Following the road uphill from the Castelo dos Mouros, after about 1km/0.75mi we reach the entrance into the park of the Palácio Nacional da Pena, or Castelo da Pena, perched on its rocky crag (alt. 528m/1,732ft). This palace was also a royal summer residence and was built, as a medieval style castle, for Ferdinand von Coburg-Koháry, Queen Maria II's consort (Fernando II), by Colonel von Eschwege 1840-50, who was instructed to incorporate elements of a 16th C. convent, and otherwise mix various building styles. Gothic, Manueline, Renaissance, Rococo, Moorish and Far Eastern features are all detectable, and Eschwege also incorporated Portuguese examples, such as modeling the principal tower on the Tower of Belém. Probably the finest ... More > views of the Serra de Sintra are to be had from the walk along the top of the walls, the Galeria, and from the dome (external staircase). The rooms of the "fairy tale castle", which likewise lack any stylistic uniformity, are packed full of furniture, china, weapons, etc. The palace has also retained parts of the old 16th C. convent, namely, the two story Manueline cloister, with azulejolined walls, and the chapel, which has a Renaissance altar (1532) by Nicolas Chanterène and 19th C. German stained glass windows. < Less Hobbies & Activities category
