In detail

All The Goring's 69 rooms and suites are individually designed, many by acclaimed British designers to create the atmosphere of a warm and inviting country house retreat with more than a touch of city sophistication. Designed by Russell Sage in 2009, the Silk Rooms have hand-woven Gainsborough silk wall coverings, while Nina Campbell introduced the spacious open-plan layout and stunning bathrooms in the studio-style Junior Suites. The Balcony Room, with the largest private balcony overlooking the gardens, was conceived by Tim Gosling and is a chic, open-plan space with stunning bespoke furniture. It is only fitting that a family-owned hotel should welcome families. It is for this reason The Goring offers a children’s programme that includes a Bedtime Story Library and an arrival gift bag.

Take advantage of the complimentary use of Victoria’s LA Fitness Club just a short walk from the hotel where you will find a swimming pool, sauna, gym and massage treatments. Then, return for a light lunch on the terrace veranda, overlooking the gardens. After lunch, head to nearby Knightsbridge, for a spot of designer shopping, or enjoy a leisurely amble through one of the Royal parks. Back at The Goring, indulge in a traditional cream tea of scones and clotted cream in the comfortable Garden Lounge or enjoy early evening cocktails on the terrace. Later, savour wonderfully creative English cuisine and vintage wine in the Dining Room, recently refurbished by David Linley. Three stunning Swarovski crystal chandeliers complement the brightness of the room which are lowered at dinner for a more intimate ambience.

Dining

The Dining Room – the restrained elegance of the David Linley designed Dining Room is home to a menu of superbly cooked British food, using carefully sourced British produce – a much-loved highlight of the London dining scene. The Lounge Bar: At the heart of a good hotel lies a great bar, and The Garden Bar at The Goring is one of the greatest of them all. A destination in its own right, sumptuously designed by Gosling, offering an extensive cocktail list. Light meals are served throughout the day in the lounge, including the finest of English traditional afternoon teas.

The Dining Room

In 2005 the famous furniture company Linley was retained and one of their designers, Tim Gosling, devised a light-filled, sophisticated, classic English look for The Goring Dining room, taking inspiration from a famous Cecil Beaton photograph of a group of Debutantes in a magnificent room. The exquisite palate of pale colours of their silk ball gowns is reflected in the stripes on each chair and in the sumptuous thick padded silk curtains. The pieces de resistance are the three subtle pink Swarovski crystal chandeliers, which hang across the ceiling. These works of art were commissioned by the hotel as exact replicas of the only other one in England, to be found at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Food Style: Superbly cooked British food, using carefully sourced British produce – a much-loved highlight of the London dining scene. Sample dishes: Starters: Eggs Drumkilbo, Lobster Omelette, Pea Shoot Salad with poached Duck Egg. Main Course: Beef Wellington; Roast Loin of Lincolnshire Pork, Sage and Onion Stuffing; Steak and Kidney Pudding; Twice Baked Goats Cheese Soufflé; Grilled Dover Sole Puddings: Not Quite a Trifle; Baked Custard Tart; Knickerbocker Glory; The Goring Chocolate Dessert.

The Goring Bar and Lounge

Designer Tim Gosling transformed the Bar and Lounge in Summer 2008. Gosling has created a feeling of lived-in luxury, inspired by the style of Empress Josephine at her Chateau de Malmaison – full bodied opulence, idealizing the French Empire period and drawing elements from the Roman Empire and the Grand Tour. The Lounge is rich, with hand-woven carpets, gilt stitched silk wall hangings, domed ceilings, with original cornicing hand gilded and distressed, with deep red bole visible in glimpses. The room is lit by candelabra, powered electrically, and designed to emit 1 lumen – the exact glow of a small dinner candle. Over the fireplace a portrait of Horatio Nelson, victor over Emperor Napoleon in the Battle of the Nile, and at each side of the fireplace are console tables in ebonised wood. The windows have fully dressed deep red silk curtains and swagging. Adorning the walls are a portrait of a Royal hussar, and a framed monogrammed white glove….left at the scene by the Pink Panther? The theme of crimson and gold is carried through to The Bar with hand sprayed red lacquer walls with a handmade carpet in a daring tiger print. Antique, burnished frames hang within frames along the walls, reminiscent of the Grand Tour and the empire. Drinks: At the heart of every good hotel there should be a serious bar, and The Goring’s Bar is the perfect place to unwind and melt into a fine cognac. Brian Kinsella has laden the bar shelves with an array of liqueurs and spirits. The top shelf is adorned with a spectrum of fine single malts, whilst below there are gins, vodkas and whiskies from across the globe in company with some of the most exclusive cognacs in the world. Light meals are served throughout the day in the Lounge - soups, sandwiches, salads, caviar, hot dishes and delicious things to share. Afternoon Tea at The Goring is an experience in its own right, with exquisite finger sandwiches, home made scones and delectable Afternoon Tea Pastries. Served daily on The Terrace which overlooks the Garden and was also refurbished by Tim Gosling in Summer 2008.
