Cornwall with the kids – and without

A land of stretching sands and stop-in-your-tracks scenery. Captivating castles and quaint little quaysides. Isolated moorland and buzzing coastal towns. Whether your idea of the perfect West Country escape is clambering up a cliff face with the kids in tow, or sharing heart-melting moments over a meal for two – there really is a side to Cornwall made for you.

FAMILY ADVENTURES FOR KIDS BIG AND SMALL

With themed resorts and water parks round every corner (or so it can seem), you certainly won’t be short of ways to entertain the kids during your stay. But creating some truly Cornish memories together that make the most of what this charming county has to offer means looking beyond the tourism leaflets.

Spark their imagination with tall tales of Cormoran, the giant of St. Michael’s Mount (above), or the Arthurian legends of the castles and caves at Tintagel. Play keeper for the day feeding fishy nibbles to the adorable rescuees of the Cornish Seal Sanctuary near Helston. Or, if you’ve got something a little more energetic in mind (and perhaps need something to tire them out), then coasteering could be right up your street.

As one of the UK’s fastest growing adventure activities, Cornwall’s untamed shoreline is just about the best place to give coasteering a go. You’ll scramble across rugged gorges, swim in secluded rock pools and, if you’re lucky, maybe even bump into a curious seal or two. So strap on the helmets, zip up the wetsuits and prepare for some thrilling family fun.

Ready to put your feet up? Then it’s back to a luxury Cornwall hotel such as The Nare for a well-earned recharge. With the little ones safely stowed in their own children’s cabin, you can get to work on planning tomorrow’s adventure.

There are lots of Cornish coasteering sites to choose from, but it’s best to avoid the popular resorts of Newquay and St. Ives. Instead, choose a quieter (but no less challenging) day’s exploring at Polzeath (left) on the north coast, or Mevagissey to the south.

Romantic memories made for a lifetime

From Daphne du Maurier’s heroines to Poldark, Cornwall has long been the setting for many a famous fictional romance. And thanks to dramatic panoramas, intimate coves and cosy cafés, it offers the perfect place to stage your own starry-eyed scenes.

It could be winding your way along the Minerals Tramway on a bicycle built for two. Tasting the finest local delicacies prepared to perfection at Ben’s Cornish Kitchen. Or simply sharing precious time with a relaxing luxury spa treatment.

You could start with some top-to-toe ‘R&R’ at one of Cornwall’s most picturesque spa hotels – Carne Bay Spa, based at The Nare. Stop by the sauna to refresh and relieve those work-worn limbs. Chill out together in a beach-hut hot tub while the waves gently caress the sands. Or simply enjoy a soothing massage and allow all thoughts to melt away (except those of your loved one, naturally).

Finally, to top off a romantic break there’s little better than a fine dining experience. If you’ve worked up an appetite with pedal power, up-and-coming eatery Ben’s Cornish Kitchen in Marazion will do the trick.

Serving locally-sourced fare fused with interesting flavour combinations, the Michelin-recommended cooking of brothers Ben and Tom Prior (and mum Jane) will certainly make a lasting impression on the palate.

If you’re looking for fresh seafood, the Kitchen won’t disappoint. But for a dessert with a twist, try the curious sweet curry plate – complete with mango curd, curried rice pudding and ginger jelly. Trust us, you won’t forget it.
