Small Luxury Hotels of the World Is Voted #1 Luxury Hotel Brand For The Third Consecutive Year by The Luxury Institute

May 2009 ¯ Small Luxury Hotels of the World™ (SLH) has for the third consecutive year been awarded top honours in the New York-based Luxury Institute's annual Luxury Brand Status Index (LBSI) survey, when it was voted number one luxury hotel brand by wealthy consumers. Small Luxury Hotels of the World beat 21 other luxury hotel brands, including Ritz Carlton and Peninsula, to achieve the top spot in the survey.

“We are absolutely delighted to have been voted number one luxury hotel brand for the third year in a row, especially amongst such a strong line-up. This is a clear demonstration of the consistency of the individual hotels within SLH and their commitment to deliver the best of the best,”’ commented Paul Kerr, Chief Executive Officer of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

The annual Luxury Brand Status Index surveyed high net worth individuals and asked them to rate luxury brands by four components, which included offering consistently superior quality, evoking a sense of uniqueness and exclusivity, being used by people who are ‘admired and respected’ and making the customer ‘feel special’. SLH surpassed its competition in all categories. In particular, SLH was ranked well ahead of all other contenders in terms of the willingness of wealthy consumers to recommend the brand to someone they care about.

The LBSI is the only measure available of the value and equity of leading luxury brands to wealthy Americans, based on statistically meaningful data collected from wealthy consumers themselves.

Key Findings of the Luxury Brand Status Index Survey Include:

  • SLH was ranked 1st out of 22 luxury brands with an overall score of 8.54 out of 10
  • SLH was the top ranking brand for all of the components of the LBSI measuring quality, exclusivity, social status and self enhancement
  • SLH received the highest score of 8.81 (against a benchmark of 7.87) for providing consistently superior quality
  • SLH received the highest score of 8.65 (against a benchmark of 7.39) for being unique and exclusive
  • SLH received the highest score of 8.09 (against a benchmark of 7.38) for being used by people who are ‘admired and respected’
  • SLH received the highest score of 8.63 (against a benchmark of 7.86) for making the customer ‘feel special’
  • SLH received the highest score, with 93 percent (against a benchmark of 74 percent) of those polled, and familiar with the SLH brand, stating that they would be willing to recommend the brand to someone you care about

The overall findings were based on responses from a sample size of over 1,500 affluent consumers with an average household income of nearly $350,000 and a net worth of $3.2 million; average age was 51 with a fairly even split between men and women. Those who were in favour of Small Luxury Hotels of the World surpassed these figures, with their average household income holding steady at $425,000 and a net worth averaging more than $4 million.

Other brands included in the survey were: Club Med, Conrad Hotels & Resorts, Fairmont, Four Seasons, InterContinental, JW Marriott, Le Meridien, Leading Hotels of the World, Loews, Mandarin Oriental, Orient Express, Park Hyatt, Peninsula, Regent, Ritz-Carlton, RockResorts, Rosewood, Sofitel, St. Regis, W Hotels and Waldorf Astoria.
