The Cameron Highlands Resort creates an experience of travel as it used to be. The property has the air of an old colonial country house. It oozes traditional values and style. Service and hospitality is everything you would expect from a hotel rooted in a bygone era.

The hotel matches traditional comfort - log fires, tea and scones and cozy corners - with all the modern elements you would expect of a luxury hotel including free WIFI in the lounge, a top quality Japanese restaurant and an outlet of Spa Village offering a full range of relaxing tea based treatments reflecting the location.

The hotel is surrounded by Strawberry fields, tea plantations and cool mountain air and is a great place to seek solace from the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur and the heat and humidity of much of the rest of the country.

We had a 2 night stay which is about the minimum required to experience everything the hotel and surrounding area has to offer. High Tea in the Jim Thompson lounge on the day of arrival was a splendid introduction. A 3 tier collection of finger sandwiches, cakes and of course scones, cream and fresh strawberries was quickly brought out together with our choice of the many locally grown teas. One tea set with an extra pot of tea proved more than ample for two people.
Then, a chance to unpack and enjoy our junior suite. As SLH members we received an upgrade from a Deluxe room but all bedrooms at the hotel enjoy balconies with views over the 18 hole golf course across the road. As expected, the suite was traditionally decorated with mahogany furnishings, comfortable sofa area and a mosquito net draped four poster bed. There was of course a large flat screen TV to keep one connected to the modern world. The bathroom was spacious with marbled floor and separate bath and double shower cubicle.
Dinner and breakfast were both taken in The Dining Room. It is wise to book for dinner as the restaurant is undoubtedly the best in the area and attracts outside diners as well as house guests. The menu is relatively expensive for Malaysia, particularly the wine list, but the food is excellent - mainly European nouveau cuisine but with some traditional Malay dishes. There is also a Japanese restaurant but this is not open every night of the week, so guests wishing to eat here should check with the hotel before they confirm their trip.
Next day, a spa treatment at the beautiful Spa Village. All main treatments such as a massage commence with a complimentary “Tea Bath” which was very relaxing. The staff appeared professional and experienced. I can recommend the Malay massage which involved the use of oils made from turmeric, garlic, cinnamon and citronella – very relaxing.
And then a visit to some of the local attractions including Raju’s Strawberry fields to buy enormous freshly plucked strawberries (as served at the hotel) and one of the BOH tea plantations for a guided tour of the tea factory and a cup of tea on the café terrace with stunning views across the terraced tea fields. As I have mentioned, there is also an 18 hole golf course across the road from the hotel and the hotel concierge staff are happy to help with bookings.
Overall, a really pleasant stay that I can highly recommend. Cameron Highlands Resort does not have the pretensions of a large city hotel – it is small and friendly. The staff go out of their way to offer a very personal service and make one feel special. The evening fire lighting ceremony with framed souvenir photo and personal send off at the hotel steps by the Resort Manger and his team are touches that we shall remember for a long time to come.
