Introducing Pemba

With ribbons of white sand and exceptional wildlife-spotting opportunities, Pemba offers a luxury beach escape with a difference. Holidays here are made for lazing beside the Indian Ocean, or setting sail to discover tiny, paradise islands. Or you could head inland to embark on a safari in one of Mozambique’s most treasured national parks. The best part? You’ll get to round off each day in a small, luxury hotel.

Things to do

CULTURE
Founded in 1904 by the Portuguese and originally called ‘Porto Amelia’, this bustling port was rechristened Pemba when Mozambique won its independence. Strolling through the streets, you’ll see plenty of colonial architecture dating back to these times. Nowadays, the heart of the city is its colourful Souk, where local artisans sell their crafts. Stop by to browse for traditional silverware at great prices.

BEACHES AND WATER
Pemba Bay lays claim to one of the world’s largest natural harbours – so glorious beaches are pretty much guaranteed. Visit popular Wimbi Beach in Pemba city, or head to the other side of the peninsula for quieter spots. Pemba Bay is also a popular choice for water sports. Glide across the waves with an afternoon’s windsurfing, or try sailing a traditional Mozambique dhow.

DAY TRIPS
Most people who come to Pemba make a beeline for the Quirimbas National Park. This protected area covers wild grasslands where you might spot leopard, lion, elephant and rare wild dogs. It also houses a marine reserve. Believed to offer some of the best diving in Africa, a journey beneath the waves could see you swimming with dolphins, sea turtles and dugongs.

Top Tip from SLH

Embark on a day’s island hopping in the Quirimbas Archipelago, stopping off for lunch on a deserted sandbank surrounded by azure waters.
