Introducing Morelia

There’s something magical about this centuries-old city in western Mexico. It could be the centuries-old churches and cobbled streets, which glow a dusky pink in the late afternoon light. The vibrant cultural scene, where there’s always something new to see and do. Or the bustling cafes and restaurants where friendly locals outnumber visitors. Why not linger awhile in a Morelia boutique hotel and find out for yourself?

Things to do

HISTORY & CULTURE
One of the first Spanish cities in Mexico, exploring Morelia’s centre feels like stepping back in time. Wide streets, lined with pink-hued buildings, seem little changed since they were first built in the early 16th century. Among the UNESCO listed buildings is the cathedral. With soaring towers and dazzling silver features inside, it’s a magnificent sight from every angle.

EVENTS
As a regional cultural capital, Morelia has a busy calendar of special events. Visit during the international music festival to see choirs, chamber groups and orchestras. Ensembles from annual ‘guest nations’ have included the London Symphony Orchestra. If cinema is more your thing, there’s the international film festival to look forward to. Or watch the country’s best dancers strut their stuff at SalaMich – a three day Salsa competition.

FOOD
Flavour-packed and spicy, the cuisine in Morelia is a delicious force to be reckoned with. Specialities include traditional tamales made with fresh, rather than dried corn, topped with crema and salsa. If you like avocado, you’re in for a real treat. Here they crop up in recipes in all sorts of creative ways, from lamb roasted over avocado pits, to avocado ice cream.

Top Tip from SLH

If you’re visiting in early spring, visit nearby butterfly reserves to witness a natural phenomenon – the migration of over a billion bright Monarch butterflies.
