Introducing Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a breath of fresh air. Savour the scent of pine forests. Glide down the powder-white piste on an early-morning ski. Then return to your luxury hotel and warm up with a steaming sauna or invigorating spa treatment. Make time for a trip to the capital, Sofia, and marvel at Bulgaria’s rich artistic heritage – like the fine frescoes and gilded basilica of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.

A land of pure serenity, from the shimmering sands of the Black Sea coast to the snow-capped ski slopes.

Cuisine: You’ll find a wide range of traditional stews packed with vegetables and beans. Or try kebapcheta (grilled sausages), shishche (shish kebab) or kyofteta (meatballs) for a meaty snack.

Tipping etiquette: Leaving a 10% tip will be well received, although it’s not obligatory.

Transport: Trains and buses are available – or for a more intimate exploration of the country, hire your own car.

When to Go

Bulgarian summers tend to be warm and dry – ideal if you’re planning to venture into the great outdoors, or relax along the Black Sea coast. In fact, you can bask in the sun and enjoy a pleasant dip right into September. For theatre season, visit Bulgaria in spring (April-June). When winter comes along and the snow begins to fall, the country’s picturesque ski resorts are the perfect retreat.

Take a private tour through the wooded Rila Mountains. If you’re lucky, you might spot Alpine ibex or the elusive brown bear.
