The Artois countryside is known for its flat, undulating plains, and a stay at Béthune puts you in the ideal position to explore the region. There’s plenty of history to uncover here, with thought-provoking evidence of both World Wars nearby. But you’ll also find lots of ways to relax in and around your grand country retreat.
A place to sit, sip coffee in the peaceful town square, and watch the rural Artois world go by.
Things to do
Béthune is a charming, small town arranged around a large open square. Wander through the streets around your luxury hotel and you’ll soon come across the tall belfry. Climb the 144 steps to see a commanding view of the rolling countryside, and see if you can spot the Belgian border. Or simply listen out for its chimes every fifteen minutes.
If you fancy burning off some steam while staying in Béthune, take the 20-minute drive to the town of Douvrin. Here you’ll find a purpose-built go-karting track that’s a favourite with the locals – and great fun for visitors.
Thanks to its border location, Béthune was extremely important strategically during the First World War. Heavy fighting here flattened much of the town, and many soldiers from both sides of the conflict were laid to rest in the local cemetery. Take a trip to nearby Arras for humbling reminders of WW1.
If you want to climb the steps in the belfry, you’ll need to book your visit with the Tourist Office. It shouldn’t be too hard to find, as it’s in the belfry too.
