The quintessential German town, Murnau looks like it should belong in a painting. So it’s no wonder artists like Kandinsky flocked to the area, inspired by the spectacular alpine vistas and sparkling lakes. Step outside your luxury hotel and you’ll quickly see evidence of Murnau’s artistic heritage in the winding streets, dotted with studios, galleries and boutiques.
Beneath snow-capped Bavarian peaks sits a charming German village.
Things to do
Take in panoramic views of the snow-dusted Alps as you ski or snowboard. Pop on some snowshoes or ice-skates and explore the frozen scenery. Or in warmer weather, walk and cycle around Lake Staffelsee. If you’re looking to improve your handicap, there are excellent golf courses in the area.
A hub for artists across the centuries, it’s not hard to see why Murnau’s beautiful surroundings inspire. Kandinsky and Munter lived in the village and you can visit the Munter-Haus where they lodged. Or simply take in the colourful, art nouveau buildings as you wander the narrow streets.
Murnauer Moos Nature Reserve is an idyllic expanse of gently rolling hills and moors, bordered by the Bavarian Alps. Hike one of the sign-posted trails, spotting wildlife as you go – there are over 110km of paths to choose from. You could always book a private bicycle tour and weave your way through the landscape.
For a truly exclusive view of this staggering landscape, take to the skies on a private hot air balloon ride.
