Things to do
The beach is the star attraction in Carvalhal. Just a hop, skip and a jump from the village, it’s well hidden by a wall of pines. Don’t worry about finding your spot – even on the sunniest days there’s plenty of space to go around. Plus, with good parking, bars and restaurants, it’s the perfect combination of rugged charm and convenience.
Set in the Alentejo region – famed for its food – eating and drinking is extra special in Carvalhal. As with all Portuguese cooking, the ingredients are the stars. Simple seafood dishes are elevated by the freshness of the catch and the culinary knowledge of local chefs – passed down through generations.
The Alentejo covers roughly a third of the country. Yet while it’s known for producing some of the finest wines in the world, little is exported. Top off a delicious lunch or dinner with a glass of award-winning red, a refreshing white, or the delicate fizz of a vinho verde. This ‘green wine’ comes from a region in the north and is unique to Portugal.
When the wind gets up, this is one of the best places in Portugal to surf and kitesurf. Book some lessons to learn the basics.
