11 Cadogan Gardens - Luxury Hotel in London

In a peaceful tree-lined square in fashionable Knightsbridge.

Every corner of 11 Cadogan Gardens tells a tale. Its story began when Victorian Lord Chelsea built four grand townhouses – and the hotel’s quirky layout and higgledy hallways are a reminder of its origins. A landmark in its bohemian neighbourhood, it began to welcome artists and aristocrats, explorers and bon viveurs. Now, a 2019 makeover has begun a new chapter for the hotel – unveiling a modern sense of style while preserving its glamorous heritage.

The fresh-faced bedrooms and reception spaces beautifully recapture 11 Cadogan Gardens’ historic elegance. As you step into the lobby, pause beside the cabinet of curiosities – a homage to Sir Hans Sloane whose presence is felt in Chelsea to this day. You can trace his collection across the guestroom and restaurant walls, too. A champion of British produce, Hans’ Bar & Grill is named after the man himself. And because he’s said to have introduced the UK to cocoa, chocolate desserts and cocoa-rich drinks take star billing.

Just beyond Hans’ Bar & Grill’s mews door are the artisan boutiques of style-savvy Sloane Square. Walk a few steps further for music at Cadogan Hall, art at The Saatchi Gallery, or a little air in the Chelsea Physic Garden. And if the streets show a little more bustle than you’d like, retreat to the calm of 11 Cadogan Gardens. On sunny days, enjoy high tea on the terrace or in the conservatory and watch the world go by – just as guests have done for hundreds of years.

Location

NEIGHBOURHOOD GUIDE

  • The best experience close to the hotel is: discovering up-and-coming artists at the Saatchi Gallery. You can even get hands on with regular workshops. Or time your visit to see arty events including Scoop, BADA Art Fair and one-off exhibitions such as the Rolling Stones retrospective.
  • The most unique spot nearby is: the Chelsea Physic Garden. Edible and medicinal plants have bloomed here since the 17th century when London’s apothecaries used them in their concoctions. Later on, poets Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon were said to have spent time in the Garden convalescing during WW1.
  • Our hidden gem is: our library, where leather-bound books share the shelves with vintage copies of Punch. Or, if the sun shines, you can’t beat drinks on our tucked-away Terrace.
  • Guests can live like a local by: shopping at Saturday’s Duke of York Square Market. This is no ordinary set of stalls though. It’s dedicated to fine foods, where you can pick up everything from delicious dim sum to artisan doughnuts. If you’re not here on a weekend, take your taste buds to foodie favourite Pavilion Road instead, where cheesemongers rub shoulders with wine merchants.
  • Our favourite local restaurant is: Hawksmoor in Knightsbridge for quite possibly the finest steaks this side of New York, or The Ivy Chelsea Garden for dinner with a side of celebrity spotting. For farm-to-table fine dining, it’s difficult to match Five Fields. Just be sure to book well in advance.
  • Our favourite time of year here is: undoubtedly the annual RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May. Much more than simply a collection of flowers, it’s a one-of-a-kind celebration of the natural world – an open-air gallery for the green-fingered.
  • There’s no place in the world like: the boutiques of Sloane Street – London’s answer to Rodeo Drive. If you can’t get to London for Fashion Week, this is the place to pick up straight-from-the-catwalk designs.
  • The most adventurous thing to do near here is: seeing a different side to London on a kayaking tour. Starting at the Cremorne Riverside Centre in Chelsea, even first-timers can paddle the Thames past Big Ben at sunset or around Little Venice by day. It beats the view from a red bus.
  • The best selfie/photo spot nearby is: our neighbourhood during Chelsea in Bloom, when local businesses show off their best floral displays. If you don’t fancy the Chelsea Flower Show itself, you can grab a ‘Bloom’ map for a self-tour starting in Sloane Square.
  • For a breathtaking view, guests should go to: the free-to-visit Roof Gardens in High Street Kensington. There’s a Spanish, Tudor and whimsical woodland garden up here, all at skyscraper level.
  • The ideal night here would be to: catch classical music at Cadogan Hall. Or seek out the entrance to bootlegger favourite Barts. Once you’ve made it inside this ‘secret’ speakeasy near Sloane Square, you’ll need to search for menus hidden within vintage books stacked in the bookcases. Find one, order and party like it’s 1929.
