Things to do
NATURE
Start the day with a visit to World’s End and Horton Plains National Park. You’ll be able to admire far-reaching views and, if you’re lucky, spot exotic wildlife. Leave before the morning mists close in and travel to Victoria Park, keeping an eye out for the many bird species that live here. After a picnic in the manicured gardens, take your camera and seek out one of the waterfalls in the highland cliffs.
DAY TRIPS
Nuwara Eliya is known as Tea Country, and for good reason – some of the finest Ceylon teas are produced here. You can easily while away the hours visiting one plantation after another. Wander the beautiful hillside terraces, watching the tea pickers working. Learn about how tea is grown and breathe in the intoxicating aroma of the fresh leaves. Then sample world-famous green and black teas with a magical backdrop.
SPORT
To play 18 holes on one of Sri Lanka’s oldest golf courses, head to Nuwara Eliya Golf Club. Built by a Scottish soldier in the late 19th century, it’s surrounded by lush foliage and offers views of the mountains and tea estates. After your round, head to the wood-panelled 19th Hole Bar for a well-earned drink amid cosy surrounds.
