A three-week itinerary from Honduras to Costa Rica

Central America is perfect for a multi-centre adventure. In a relatively small area, you’ll find a myriad of wildlife, a treasure trove of sights and pristine Caribbean beaches. This itinerary takes you from the eco-idyll of Atlantida, Honduras to some of the best luxury hotels in Costa Rica, finishing at Little Corn Island, Nicaragua. Three countries in three weeks may sound a little daunting, but our experienced Travel Advisors make everything easy.

AT A GLANCE

● Three-week independent itinerary for Central America based on flying into San Pedro Sula, Honduras and out of San José, Costa Rica

● Embark on mini-adventures discovering waterfalls and exploring volcanoes – all while staying in Central America’s best luxury hotels

● Highlights include delving into the wild Honduran rainforest, snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters of Little Corn Island, watching hummingbirds flit through the Costa Rican cloud forest

A FLYING START: ATLANTIDA, HONDURAS

Your adventure starts here: on the unspoilt (and largely undiscovered) north coast of Honduras. Just a short transfer from San Pedro Sula airport brings you to The Lodge and Spa at Pico Bonito, a contemporary eco-lodge with its own butterfly farm, surrounded by rainforest.

After a relaxing day or two sampling delights such as the pool and spa, join one of the experienced guides for an Indiana-Jones-esque trek into the jungle. While there are plenty of trails to choose from, our pick is the 5-hour hike to ‘Unbelievable Falls’. As the name suggests, your ultimate destination is a spectacular double waterfall complete with inviting swimming hole.

At Pico Bonito, you’re also just moments from the sparkling waters of the Caribbean, if you want to swap butterfly and bird spotting for snorkelling, diving and deep-sea fishing. Or for more sensational diving – including the chance to swim with gentle Whale Sharks – make for the nearby Bay Islands, just a short ferry ride away.
Suggested stay 5-7 nights.

NEXT UP: COSTA RICA

From San Pedro Sula it’s a 3-hour flight to San José, Costa Rica… Just time to pen a few postcards and catch a movie before the next leg of your adventure begins.

As you make for your first luxury hideaway along the South Pacific coast, don’t miss the breath-taking Nauyaca Waterfalls. Tucked away in dense jungle, these falls are a 2.5-mile hike, horseback ride or 4x4 adventure from the 243 road – as you head west from San Isidro de El General towards Uvita. Make the effort and you’ll be rewarded with 200-ft falls, crystal-clear swimming pools and (if you’re lucky) hummingbirds and monkeys.

LIVE THE HIGH LIFE

From Nauyaca, it’s an easy drive to your first stop: Hotel Three Sixty. Perched 300-metres above the ocean in Ojochal de Osa, the views are awe-inspiring. Take a dip in the curved infinity pool, indulge in some pampering, and dine on fresh-from-the-ocean fish.
Suggested stay 5-7 nights.

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS: ARENAL, COSTA RICA

After a week exploring Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, it’s time to take the road north past San José to seek out some of the country’s ‘must sees’. Don’t miss the conical perfection of Arenal Volcano and the chance to take a legendary zip-wire tour through the cloud forest. To get off the beaten track join a private night hike into the jungle or a rafting cruise down the peaceful Penas Blancas.

PUT YOUR FEET UP

To make your visit as indulgent as it is intrepid, stay at El Alma Soul Retreat. This eco-luxury hotel offers spectacular views of the rainforest and volcano, not to mention sublime spa treatments. Suggested stay 2-3 nights.

LAST STOP: LITTLE CORN ISLAND, NICARAGUA

It’s back to the Caribbean ocean with a short flight from San José to Big Corn Island, just off the coast of Nicaragua. From there, a short water taxi brings you to your next destination: Yemaya Island Hideaway and Spa.

With its swaying palms, china-white sands and beautiful bays, this is the definition of ‘getting away from it all’. It would be tempting to do nothing for a few days but, if adventure calls, there are plenty of experiences to discover: charter a yacht and seek out secluded swimming spots, picnic on a private island, fish for snapper and dine on your catch… There’s no shortage of things to do. Suggested stay 5 nights.

TRAVEL TIPS

While you could make this journey into a truly epic road trip, if time is short it’s best to arrange internal flights and collect a rental car at the airport. In Honduras, we’d recommend arranging a transfer directly with The Lodge and Spa at Pico Bonito  – that way, you’ll arrive relaxed and ready to explore.
