Celebrating Jersey’s vibrant sea-, street- and Michelin-starred food
At just five miles wide and barely nine long, we’ll forgive you for wondering exactly how much Jersey has to offer in the way of culinary adventures. Yet when it to comes to unforgettable food experiences, this petite island certainly punches well above its weight.
With fresh seafood by the ocean, a thriving street food culture inland and no fewer than three Michelin-starred restaurants across the island, here’s why all foodies should be hopping across the Channel this summer.
On the coast
You’ll find meaty lobsters, sweet spider crabs and delicately balanced oysters on many menus across the island. And with a surprisingly varied coastal landscape that takes in rugged cliffs, rolling sand dunes and sweeping beaches, a bite to eat at the water’s edge offers a feast for the eyes too.
Our recommendation has to be Faulkner’s Fisheries at L’Etacq. Set in a converted WWII German gunning placement, you’ll enjoy the catch of the day in one of the island’s quirkiest eateries. It’s joined, of course, by the famous Jersey Royal potatoes and homemade garlic Jersey butter.
Top Tip: During the summer months, head over to St. Ouen Bay for daily beach barbecues courtesy of Faulkner’s Fisheries – with sizzling lobster, mackerel, scallops and more straight from the ocean to the grill.
On the town
The mainland may be out of sight, but in Jersey you’re never more than a few minutes away from fine food and drink. There’s stylish dining on offer at a host of top restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Ocean at one of Jersey’s luxury hotels The Atlantic. With stunning westerly views across the sea, it’s the perfect spot to catch the sunset as you sample head chef Mark Jordan’s sophisticated, locally-influenced menu.
Yet fine food is never quite complete without a fine wine. Thankfully, Jersey has its very own vineyard – La Mare Wine Estate in St. Mary. Spend a summery afternoon relaxing among lush vines and orchards while tasting a range of handmade wines, ciders and brandy. You’ll also be able to tuck in to local specialities including the curious le noir buerre, or ‘black butter’ – a traditional preserve that’s perhaps best described as a sweet apple cheese. (Don't judge it until you’ve tried it.)
Top tip: Jersey cows have long been famous for their high-fat, creamy milk – but the melt-in-the-mouth tenderness of Jersey beef is quickly gaining a reputation all of its own. Reserve a table at Ocean to find out what all the fuss is about.
On the go
Jersey’s culinary renown is firmly rooted in the field and under the sea. But with an ever-growing street food and festival scene specialising in gourmet grub on the go, there’s another world of flavour to be found in the island’s urban pockets.
Home to ‘Street Food Thursdays’, St. Helier offers a veritable platter of casual chow to choose between each week. Get stuck in to freshly grilled burritos from Domingo’s Food Truck. Grab natural snacks both savoury and sweet from the Wild Health shack. Or experience the delights of The Chugging Pig – served up in style by a former Michelin-starred restaurant chef from her vintage Citroën H-Type van.
Planning to visit a little later in the year? Then the annual Eat Jersey Food Festival (hosted by Ocean at The Atlantic Hotel) is pretty much reason enough. You’ll have the chance to feast on the best local produce prepared by a prestigious line-up of chefs – from the Channel Islands and beyond. And on top of that, you’ll also be supporting the producers and suppliers of this little island, all while raising funds for the Jersey-based Durrell Conservation Trust.
Top Tip: To stay just the right side of healthy, try The Chugging Pig’s homemade falafels with cauliflower and tomato tabbouleh, yogurt and sweet chilli. It’s hard not to go back for seconds.
