Introducing Zihuatanejo

Until fairly recently this Pacific beach resort was just a sleepy Mexican fishing village. Now the luxury hotels and chi-chi bistros have created a more exclusive feel, and it has been used as the paradise backdrop for Hollywood movies. But you’ll still find plenty of Mexican charm and captivating history under the surface. Old cobbled streets and a working fishing harbour make Zihuatanejo a unique and beautiful retreat.

Things to do

BEACHES
The sparkling coastline is one of the main reasons visitors come here, and who can blame them. The main beach is Bahia Zihuatanejo, which is calm and sheltered. But you’ll find plenty of others, including private coves that can only be reached by boat.

SPORT
Grab a rod, charter a private boat and glide into the ocean to enjoy some deep sea fishing. Or head to the local amphitheatre and its basketball courts, where locals hang out and play. You might be lucky enough to catch a match too.

FOOD
The local fishermen sell their fresh catches every morning in town, but if you’d rather have someone else cook it for you then there are plenty of tempting restaurants selling seafood. Enjoy fine dining under the stars, or a taste of traditional Zihuatanejo in a local haunt.

Top Tip from SLH

When you’re on the beach you can shelter from the sun under a thatched umbrella for free, as long as you buy drinks and snacks from the owner.
