A winter break in Utah, USA

Wake up to spectacular alpine views. Breathe in crisp mountain air. And enjoy exclusive access to some of the world’s best ski slopes. The Stein Eriksen Residences puts you right at the centre of Deer Valley in Utah, one of the most exclusive ski resorts in the USA. If you’re planning a white winter escape of your own, here’s just some of what you have to look forward to when you ski out west…

Forget trudging through slush-covered streets with your skis under your arm. Or jostling for position in the queue for the chairlift. When you stay at the Stein Eriksen Residences, the slopes come, quite literally, to you. Boasting direct ski in, ski out access from the hotel’s lounge to the Silver Dollar and Last Chance runs, you can just strap on your skis and go. And you won’t have to worry about the quality of the pistes: they’re kept in immaculate condition, freshly buffed every day.

Nervous novice or seasoned expert, you’ll have over 99 ski trails at Deer Valley to choose from. Nursery slopes to suit complete beginners can be found at Silver Lodge. If it’s deep powder you’re after, try the slopes off the Mayflower lift, or bask in honeyed rays of the afternoon sun while making your way down the aptly-named Star Gazer. You can access this scenic route from the Red Cloud lift on Flagstaff Mountain.

If you’re not quite sure where to start or want to discover new paths down the slopes, take a complimentary tour of the resort with a friendly Mountain Host. Follow their lead to exhilarating black diamond trails, off-piste runs through the trees and untouched powder, allowing you to briefly escape into the winter wilderness. As you might expect, these tours are aimed at intermediate to experienced skiers, and run four times a day. Or, if you really want to get your heart racing, there’s always a spot of downhill racing held daily at Bald Mountain.

Tired quads? Or fancy something different? Your skis won’t mind. Although you could spend all holiday flying downhill, there are plenty of other exciting activities to keep you entertained. Go romantic with a horse-drawn sleigh ride. Admire the glorious peaks and the majestic Jordanelle reservoir from a hot air balloon. Or even race through the snow, Arctic-style, behind a dog sled. With 20km of cross-country trails at Deer Valley, there’s a chance to broaden your skills and try a spot of Nordic skiing, too.

If you want to take a break from all the outdoor action, your hotel is a great place to start. Stretch out any ski-weary muscles with a workout in the fitness centre or a swim in the heated outdoor infinity pool. Treat yourself to a session at the Stein Eriksen spa, which is set in the main lodge. Or, if you’re staying as a family, make the most of the games room, or head off bowling or ice skating.

After a day on the slopes, your arrival back at Stein Eriksen Residences will be something to savour. Whether you’re staying in a spacious room or a sprawling private residence, you’ll have all you need to relax in style. Curl up in front of a roaring log fire. Soak those aching limbs in the hot tub out on your deck. Or simply put your feet up, drink in hand, and watch evening fall across the snow-capped peaks through the enormous, wraparound windows.

After some time to yourself, wander down to the hotel restaurant to enjoy an aperitif and a delicious meal overlooking the mountains. If you want to venture further afield after a days’ skiing, the twinkling lights and buzzing bars of Park City are a short journey away by car. But it could be just as tempting to cosy up next to the fire-pit on the hotel terrace, under a sky full of stars.
