Things to do
Dali is a must-visit for keen golfers of every handicap. Home to the Canghai Golf International Community, hone your swing on undulating courses with plenty of tree-lined and open-parkland fairways, surrounded by scenic mountain views.
Dali Ancient Town contains plenty of well-preserved buildings, as well as some fascinating museums. Some of the historic city wall still stands, as do three of its four ancient entrance gates. Within the old town centre you can see traditional Bai folk houses. But the main draw is the Three Pagodas Temple, with its trio of towers standing against a backdrop of the Cangshan mountain.
Cangshan, the tallest peak of the Yunling mountains, stands just to the west of Dali. The landscape of valleys and slopes threaded with brooks has been a common subject for local painters for centuries. The myriad mountain streams all flow down to Erhai lake, which is the second largest highland lake in China.
