Things to do
Discover Konstanz’s medieval heritage with a stroll through the Old Town, or Altstadt. Lose yourself in the Niederburg district, where lanes of 14th-century houses open out to bustling market squares. It’s here that you’ll find the cathedral where the Council of Konstanz, a defining moment in the history of the Catholic Church, was held. Discover centuries-old artwork as you walk in the footsteps of kings and bishops, who met here in 1414 to choose the next Pope.
As a buzzing university town, Konstanz has plenty of quirky venues and trendy bars to explore. Take in the work of local artists at the Cultural Centre. Then, after dinner by the harbour, seek out classical concerts from the Philharmonic Orchestra, or avant-garde performance at Theatre Konstanz.
With the Bodensee on the doorstep, Konstanz is a hotspot for water sports. Enjoy a day out on the lake aboard a private yacht, or dive in and try waterskiing and windsurfing. If a little relaxation is in order, take to the thermal waters of Konstanz’s lakeside spa. On summer nights, the sky lights up with thousands of fireworks for Seenachtfest.
The Bodensee is home to a tiny tropical paradise – Mainau, the ‘flower island’. Sail over from Konstanz to explore beautiful gardens and greenhouses teeming with bright butterflies.
