St James’s Hotel and Club

A superbly stylish London retreat, St James’s Hotel and Club hits exactly the right note between contemporary chic and traditional charm. Perfectly located in a peaceful road close to Mayfair and Piccadilly, this hidden gem is set in an elegant townhouse and has a gourmet restaurant, a bistro, a fine collection of artwork and access to a nearby spa.

The rooms and suites at St James’s Hotel and Club have an elegant ambiance with handmade silk wallpaper in soft neutrals, black lacquered furniture and handcrafted Murano glass chandeliers, as well as iPod and iPhone docking stations. Original works of art hang on the walls in all the rooms.

Green Park is virtually on the doorstep and ideal for an early morning jog or stroll. Close by are Jermyn Street and Bond Street, renowned for exclusive shopping. Visit the Royal Academy of Arts and pop into Fortnum and Mason for some edible treats before returning to St James’s Hotel for a delicious gourmet dinner in Seven Park Place by William Drabble.

The rooms

  • The best experience close to the hotel is: watching auction day at Christie’s of King Street. Whether you go to bid or just be dazzled by the lots on sale, you can admire everything from fine art to fine wines.
  • The most unique spot nearby is: Jermyn Street, which has been a sartorial magnet since the 1600s. Here you can pick up tailored shirts, rare wines and handcrafted leather goods. As you browse, look for blue plaques marking the historical homes of luminaries such as Sir Isaac Newton.
  • Our hidden gem is: our Club rooms that have played host to Sir Winston Churchill, Liza Minelli and Ian Fleming. For one guest’s eyes only, The Penthouse hides a true London treasure – a private roof terrace with 360° skyline views. Our not-so-hidden gem is Golden Keys honoured Madeleine, the hotel’s chief concierge and in-the-know guide to all things London. There’s even a dedicated Kids’ Concierge for families.
  • Guests can live like a local by: dipping into local art galleries. As well as big names such as the Institute of Contemporary Arts, tiny exhibitions are dotted around the neighbourhood. Try White Cube or Stern Pissarro. You’re likely to rub shoulders with art aficionados picking up pieces by up-and-coming creatives through to old masters.
  • Our favourite local restaurant is: art deco icon Quaglino’s for cocktails as delicious as the cuisine, or equally enigmatic The Wolseley. This Italianate grand café is made for afternoon tea.
  • Our favourite time of year here is: August when, for one month only, visitors can see inside Clarence House. You can take a summery stroll from St James’s Hotel & Club straight to this royal residence. Earlier in the season, London Art Week is an inspiring time to tour the creative neighbourhoods here.
  • There’s no place in the world like: the inside of the cigar shops that give St James its well-heeled reputation. The scent of Romeo y Julietas will whisk you straight to Havana. And you could be shopping in the shadows of movie stars and royalty.
  • The most adventurous thing to do near here is: watching (and listening to) the ceremonial gun salutes that happen periodically in Green Park. Just remember to brace for the ‘boom’.
  • The best selfie/photo spot nearby is: St James’s Square. Whether it’s the height of summer or deepest autumn when the trees turn rust and gold, it’s a picture-perfect spot.
  • For a breathtaking view, guests should go to: the lake in St James’s Park, skirting it until you see Horse Guards Parade. Come at 2.30pm and you may even catch the resident pelicans being fed.
  • The ideal night here would be to: start with style and treat yourself to Michelin-starred fine dining at the hotel. Then dip into the world of Victorian explorer Phileas Fogg with gin cocktails at Mr Fogg’s of Mayfair. Bag a table in the drawing room or parlour and sup until the early hours.
