The Tabacón approach is to employ sound and sustainable principles throughout the entire life cycle of its infrastructure. Every drop of Tabacón water has always been and will always be true, thermal water, naturally heated by the volcano and slowly mineralised, underground. The installation of 836 solar panels means that the energy generated for the resort is clean and completely renewable, while over 1,500 trees have been planted on property as part of an ongoing reforestation project. The resort is also a pioneer in La Fortuna Electric Route, facilitating installations for recharging electric vehicles to make electric transport viable in Costa Rica.

Cultural Custodians

With its rainforest reserve setting, Tabacón makes a luxurious base for discovering the astounding Arenal Volcano region. In partnership with a local, ethical tour provider, Tabacón encourages guests to delve deep into Costa Rican culture, from coffee and chocolate making classes, to guided wildlife and waterfall walks and handicraft days spent with the Maleku tribe, the smallest indigenous community of Costa Rica. Meanwhile, the palm-thatched spa centres around the life-giving properties of its natural springs, using raw materials such as coffee, lemon grass, pineapple, cocoa, yucca, and rice to create a true ‘Tico’ wellness experience.

Community Minded

As one of the main employers in the area, Tabacón provides job opportunities to residents and neighbouring communities and recently launched the ‘Together We’ll Go Ahead’ campaign to provide meals to workers in the tourism industry affected by the pandemic crisis. The food was prepared in the Tabacón kitchen and distributed to different communities, positively impacting 850 families. The resort passionately supports local suppliers, not only through a sustainable gastronomy programme which showcases Costa Rican produce and regional delicacies, but also by supporting the ‘Tu-MoDeLo’ programme of sustainable local supply.
