START IN STYLE: ST BRELADE, JERSEY
Start your Channel Island break as you mean to go on – in the comfort of a boutique bolthole by the shore. The Atlantic Hotel is set in six acres of private gardens overlooking the glimmering golden sands of St Ouen’s Bay, just a short drive from Jersey Airport. Suggested stay, 5 nights.
After you’ve settled in, it’s time to get out and explore. At nine miles by five, Jersey might be the largest of the Channel Islands, but it’s compact enough to explore it all by bicycle. What better way to experience the sights, scents and sounds of Jersey’s abundant countryside and dreamy coastline?
South coast saunter: 20 miles return
Starting your day at The Atlantic Hotel – or from a cycle hire shop in nearby St Aubin – it won’t take you long to spot Route 1. This popular cycle trail stretches out along 10 miles of spectacular south coast. Meandering eastward along the traffic-free route, you’ll be spoiled for a choice of cafes offering the chance to stop, refuel and soak up the atmosphere. This is somewhere to take your time. So relax into the ride as you take in the sun-soaked south, with its beaches, charming harbour villages and panoramic ocean views.
From coast to countryside: 10-mile loop
Pedal your way to Route 1 from the Atlantic Hotel and wend your way north along spectacular St Ouen’s Bay, popular with surfers for its impressive swells. As you arrive in Les Mielles Nature Reserve, the National Trust Wetland Centre presents a perfect chance to refuel while spotting birds. It’s here that your inland adventure begins – Route 6 invites cyclists east and in-land to the parish of St Peter. The route reconnects to Route 1 and the coast again at St Aubin, where you can meander via St Brelade’s Bay back to the Atlantic Hotel. Refresh your legs with a swim in the indoor and outdoor pools before enjoying a well-deserved meal in their Ocean Restaurant.
THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES: GUERNSEY
Just an hour’s journey by ferry from Jersey is its neighbouring island, Guernsey. And just a short hop from where the ferry docks at St Peters Port is Belle Luce Hotel and Spa. With its serene spa, artisan gins from its own distillery and award-winning dining, this luxury retreat perfectly complements leisurely days spent exploring Guernsey’s modest nine miles by three. Suggested stay, 5 nights.
The majesty of St Martin: 12-mile loop
If you’re hiring a bicycle, you can pick up your wheels at a shop in the parish of St Martin itself. Once you’re ready, roll onto cycle Route 7, which passes by the grounds of Belle Luce. From there, it’s on towards the jagged beauty of the Jerbourg Peninsular and the majesty of the Moulin Het valley’s woodlands and streams.
Central circular: 11-mile loop
Ride a short distance toward St Martin’s Parish Hall to pick up Route 6, a central circle of Guernsey that delight the senses with its rural beauty. Think lanes lined with wild flowers, hedges and trees, all tucked away from the coast. Several valleys await: Talbot, Les Vauxbelets and Fauxquets – each with its own appeal, and the opportunity to spot Guernsey donkeys. Take a moment to admire the Little Chapel at Les Vauxbelets, an exquisite miniature grotto which started life in 1914.
Both Jersey and Guernsey have flights to the UK and mainland Europe, with an easy ferry connection between the two islands. Bike hire facilities are never far away, which makes starting your cycle adventure simple. Many hire shops also offer e-bikes – ideal for those who want a helping hand taking on taking on hills or exploring further afield.
